The two spelling mulches recently held bore were so much enjoyed that it has been decided to have a pro nouncing match next. Tho price of admission will bo on!)' ten conls, and the proceeds will bo contributed to Chatham's stone in tho proposed Confederate monument at Raleigh. Instead of giving out words to bo spelled, words will bo written ou a blackboard to bo pronounced by the onlostanls, und tho mistakes will be more amusing eveu than those in the ttpulling matches. Superior Court. Tho next term of the superior court ot this county will be held week after next, be ginningon the 8th day of Muj The K-esidingJudne will bo Hon. Henry Bryan, of Newborn, who held our February court and inado so favor able an impression on our people. There is not very much business for court. On tho criminal dockot are 45 cases, and none of them of much importance, being indictments for misdemeanors and petit larceny. There is an unusually largo number of prisoners in jail awaiting their trial, becauso the were not able to give bonds for their appearance. On tho civil issue docket are only 23 cases, and none of them are of much importance. And on tho appearance docket thero are only throe cases, which shows that there is very lit tle litigation in Chatham. It docs pot speak wolf for a county when there are so many more criminal cases than thero are civil cases, be causo it indicates that thero aie more crimes committed than there ih busi ness transacted among its citizens. Carthago Blade: The two story resideneo ou J. O. Foushoe'o Deep River plantation was destroyed by fire on tho night of the 11th inst., the occupants barely escaping with their iives. At the tuuo the upper lloors were occupied by thegeneral manager, chief engiueer and staff of the Golf & Gleudon It. It. Co., and the lower floors by Thomas Mushburn nnd family. When discovered the tissues had euveloped tho wall aud roof of one side. Mr. Ediuunstou, Sr., was badly burned about tho face nud bauds. He was forced to climb from ft second story window, alighting on tho top of the piazza and sliding down a post. 'When the Mathbums got outaud supposed thatuo ono waalrft in the burning building, it was dis covered that ouo of their small chil dren was missing. Chief Engineer F. J Jones espied the child iu the fiery furnace, and without a thought of his own dauger, rukhed through the smoke and fiames and rescued tho tittle one. It was quite a heroic act, and Mr. Jones was badly burned about tho face and bauds. Tho rail road meu lost heavily not saving as much as a suit of clothes. Tho books, charts aud papers of fho company weio all destroyed. Dv hard work the other buildings on the place were saved. Tho injured were doing well at last accounts. Heavy Show in Minneapolis. Mrs. Truman I Chapman, of this city, has a very beau ! tiful aud valuable relic of "vo olden j times" iu the sbupe of a lady's skirt. It was made by hand, of a delicate I texture, and is lined with wool. It is adorned with tunny pictures woven in to the fabric pictures of birds, fish, the lion and the unicorn lighting over the crown, and many other things. It has the date of its manufacture on it March, 174D. Its color is old gold aud the name of the weaver is woven into it also. This skirt has been handed down through her family since theu froinpareut tocbild. It S about twino as huge as the hugest crinoliue skirt of the present day. and is, indeed, a unique aud curious article of apparel, judged by our modern eyes. It has beeu preserved very well and is low much stronger thun many fabrics manufactured today. A Cold Blooded Murder. Kxoxvu.i.b, Tonn.. April 24. A telegram received hero tells of the murder of Thomas Tallent, iu Mod roo couuty. Ho was sitting iu his room rend up when some ouo fired through the window. The shot look effect in bis head, killing him instant ly. The coroner's jury held Q. B. Stopp guilty, aud he was arrested and is now iu jail. He is tho brother in law of the doad uiau. The murder is supposed to be the sequel of troublo between Stopp ami his wife. She left her husband's houso February 20th and weut to her brother's houso where she was pres ent wheu the killing occurred. She asked for alimony some weeks siuce aud divorce from bed and board. A Suicide iu Yadkin. Special la th Charlotte Cbxerrer. Winston, April 22. Isaac Hutch ins, a prominent farmer aud merchant of Forbush, Yadkiu county, commit ted suicide Thursday night by haug iug himself with a rope. Tho body was found hanging by members of the family next morning. Financial trou ble is supposed to have beeu the cause of the sad affair. A few years ago bo was recognized among the sub stautial meu of the county. Misfor tuties, however, overtook him, caus ing him to make oue or two failures. Tho old man is s;:id to havo saturated the clothing of the girl and tho bed on which she was sleeping wilh kero sene oil and stuck tiro to it, thinking it was his wilo. Tho girl was bor rihly burned, aud to night it is re ported she is dead. Scurlock can not bo found. Col ton Killed by Frost. Jackson, Miss., April 2."). The First Regiment armory, Sixteenth and Michigan avenue, was totally de stroyed by fire this morning. Two men lost their lives. The loss to the State on arms, ammunition, etc., is not known. The properly was in sured for IO.0DU. The loss on the building, which cost $150,000, is a total loss. Fined for Sabbath Breaking. PiTTSnrno, Pa., April 22. Charles W. Houston, bjsiness manager of the Pittsburg Press, nppeared bbfore Alderman Iiolio today and was ad judged guilty of publishing a news paper ou four Sundays in Januaiy, four in March and ouo in April. He was fined 25 on each count. The complaiuttut was the Law aud Order Society. A Tragedy iu Louisiana. Alexandria, La , April 22 At Rosa sfation, St. Land rev parish, Charlton W. Harvard yesterday, iu a quarrel, shot aud heriously wounded Owen Heath. Russell and John Heath pur sued Hat void with guns, and were themselves shot, Russell being killed aud Jehu fatally wounded.
