'. 7rY it.i ttmntfes a democrats desired r expected, but It is cortainly a long Stei) in the riirht direction and is a tery groat improvement on tho Me Kinley bill, as can bo very easily proved. As thia new t'iriir bill has been very grossly misrepresented we will here nttempt to correct some of these ihisreprosentatloflHj and show where in it is so great an improvement on the MeKiuley bill. In the Crst place this much abused taritt bill, us now nnally passed, maces on the free fist, that is, abolishes ; customs duties or taritr tax on a largo number of articles that are most generally used by the tanners ot the Country. For instance, it places on the free list, or removed tho land tax on (arm machinery and agricul tural implements, such us plows, fc'Sifuws. drills, mowers, rcupers, threshing machines, cotton gins, Ac. il also places on the tree list cotton tics, bagging, burlaps, binding twine and salt, IoV then can any friend ot tho farmers say tin t this tariff bill is not au improvement on iho MeKinley bill ? Indeed so favorable is this bill to the farmers, and especially to Southern farmers, that many North ern Congressmen denounced it as this legislation in their peculiar in terests. They raised tho cry that this bill was against tho laborors in Nortborn manufactories and only for Southern farmers. So that the last man oi all others lo denounce this now tariff bill should bo a South e.rn fanner I Not only does this now taritT bill place on tho free list so many artin ties necossury to tho farmer, but it also greatly reduces tho tariff tux on many other articles. For instance, the tariff lax on coal and iron ore in reduced Irotn 75 cents to 40 cents a ton, and on tin it is reduced Irom 7S per cent lo 42 per cent. On soda, which is so much used in every farmer's family, tho tariff tax is re duced just one-half. On matches it is reduced from 31 to 20 per cent. But the reduction, which will prob ably relievo the greatest uumber ot persons, is that on woollon goods, which in tho AlcKinley bill was tho great lortrcss of protection and out rage ou tho taxpayers. The duties, or tariff tax, on woollen goods have been reduced, on an average, more than 50 per cont, or one-halt. For rnstance, the reduction on blankets is nearly 70 per cent: on woollen shawls it is 55 per eci.t: wool hats 66 per cent: wool carpels 51 per cent and flannel underwear 71 per cent. As ull these articles aro so generally used by everybody, such a great reduction in tho tariff tax ou them should be a very grateful re lief, tor it will reduce the cost ot woolleo goods to the peoplo ot the United States nearly tco hmv trd million d'dliirs I And if this Congress bad done nothing else than to reduce so mnch the tariff tux on woollen goods, it would huvo done more for the American people than has been ttono by any other Cougros since tho war ! Wot only does this r.ew tariff bill no greatly roduco tho tariff on many articles, am) altogether ubolishcis il en others, that aro necessarily used by tbe bulk of the people, bU it also levies a new tax, tax exclusively on rich people, called an income tax. Yes, besides reducing the taxes on tho necessaries of life, this bill also makes the wealth ot the country j or his deputy. Salaries received bear itabarden of taaatiou ly taxing, horn corporations are reported by . . ... , . . the corporations to the collector of tbo income of thoso who are , best - m? ieuta cl,,tl ict. TbMM 0I bio to pay taxos. Many millions thtj Hal,irifJ8 0f tfi,-ila of the United of dollars a y. ar will now be colloct- j States is to be deducted by the pay 4 from this sjurce, and therefore mutter. that much loss will bo wiuirod from other sources. It will thus bo scon from the ubove statamcnts, which cannot bo doniodi that tho now tariff bill is a vory great improvement on tho MeKinloy bill, and (should bo thankfully ie ooivoit instead ot being denounced. And if it in not as pod us it ought j to be, who in to blame? Not Mr. Ilm.srt Oelatle ltOUMl Cleveland nor tho dcnv surely, lor they both did all they could do to get a bettor bill. The trouble and stumbling block was in tho Senate, in which body on the strictest party question the demo crats had only one majority. If tho democrats could have had in tho Senate such a majority, proportion atoly, as they had in the House thero Would have been tio trouble what ever in passing tho Wilson bill with ' out any amendments. Or if tho populist Senators had voted with tho democrats tho Wilson bill might bavo been passod. Don't forget this. Yos, it is rather cheeky tor our pop ulist friends to Mud tault with tho democrats tor not passing a better bill, when their own Senators re fused to help them ' CoNtiRE.su will probubly have sd- joiirnod before this reaches all our j readers, and its acts and .loings will haVo panscd into history. And .iu.st bero wo venture the tiredieiion that, ' as time passes by and lirejiidico sub - i H'u' Ulls will he regarueil wil1' nioru and more favor. Wlnlo :. 1 I:.
