Other nations wont out to battle but the Germans to tear. War Mid tho chaso were tho only honorable occupations tor tho men but tho women were to plant and harvest tho crops and do lho drudg cry in general. J hen too, 0111113 details and apparent I3' little things Hint the lCoinau historian monlioned are quite manifestly to ho recognized to this day. Ho tells us that these German barbarians alwuysciime late tu meetings ami todny in Germany it you are invited to come to an en tortainmont ul S o'clock you aro not expected until ;l. Upon such on occasion I called at halt past eight upon a professor's family but found thorn totally unprepared and I waited 30 minutes tor the other ttuests. We havo only to recur to tlio fact that wo in America aro lin eal descendants of theso sumo people Tacitus describes, to account for lho prevalence oi this custom amonir jis, Tho ditlorenco between the Ameri can and tho modern German in this respect is in degree not in kind. lho A mniicu 11 comes about 30 min utes lalo whereas with tho German it is often 00. With especial em phasis does Tacitus describe tho German s fondness tor beer and his passioii for gambling and today in spite ot Gorman culture and slates manship the ragu fur lotteries and other gambling devices is universal. I am informed that the Kinprrnr William is not less addicted lo this habit than his subjects. Such con trusts might bo pro'onged indi finito 13' and 1 havo simpl3 adduced these instances as illustrating and explain ing an unomaly lhat seems to exist in this land perhaps lho leader ot all others in culture and enlightenment. In punctilio and etiquette, that which wo call society or tho French ion ton, the Germans try to excel but Ihey cant ; il is fundamentali st variance with t:io German nature and the cll'ort is sometimes painful and even ridiculous. Tho Ameri cans aro confessed' practical and to attempt affectation of manners, and llatteiy (to speak plainly) is disgusting or al best quite Eivjllzh. One of lho most a musing tilings 1 havo seen in Kuropo is a Gorman student in company with a professor. For a reach man to assume all this uaviiy- ot manner and gesticulation seems to me natural, but it provokes a smile when tho German attempts lo imitate lum. I am going to Wittenberg, Luth er's home, this week and will write an account of 013- experience in this cradle of our Protestant faith. Kunkst T. Bynum. Marvelous Hesiilts.
