0 O *oo*oo*oo*oo* a ° «• SIDE STREET GOSSIP. * * By Joe Foreman. * o ... 0 O O *oo*oo*oo*oo* It is not because there is nothing happening in this section that would the tongues wagging that this -column is all but empty this week, but since spring is sure enough here and to© are so far behind with everything I just naturally haven’t time to put it down. The 21st of April and not a .grain of corn planted, is enough to make a man set up and think. It is Karri enough to keep going these days when the cat birds are singing and along about the time you are do ing up the night work you hear a thrush singing her evening song in the woods not far off. It makes a fellow wish there was not so much work to I>e done and that you could just spend a whole week or so away off some where where nobody could always be after you and telling you what you ought to be doing. We went to town last Saturday ev ening and I just made up my mind that about the surest way I know and no expense either, of gettmg out of your misery, w )uld be to be a little careless about crossing the streets and paying no attention to which way the automobiles are going. The only .safe place to be is where even a Ford can't get to you and I have calculat ed that this place is up on the west sJde of the river in the big woods. You are more likely ot find the suck ers playing about the mouth of the branches on this side any way. OUR GOOD FRIENDS. The following good people have subscribed for the paper during the past week or renewed and we appre ciate every one of them: J. W. Sears, L. R. Jones, Mrs. Lucy Edwards, L. F. Haith, J. C. Jones, j The News Bureau. Mrs. Allen Wil-j sett, J. T. Horton. J. D. Rogers, Z. C. I Johnson, B. C. Fox, Geo. Thompson,; X J. Andrew, J. F. Burnette, J. C. j Webster. J. W. Pennington, Mrs. W. j W. Frazier, 11. A. Pennington, Lauren Foreman, J. D. Johnson. Mrs. Calvin Cox, H. P. Smith, W. W. Dark, W. C. 'Perry, M. H. Woody, W. N. Page, H. X*. Barber. IN MEMORIAM. On the 13th day of April, 1923, the • -spirit of Mrs. Charlie Phillips took its j RWht to realm of the departed 1 and her body was carried to Mays: Chapel on sLpril the loth and laid to rest until the morning of her Master’s j coming in which she trusted for that j eternal life to which we all hope to ! attain. O! how well we'll ere remember When separation’s hand so fierce Laid itself upon our loved one, And our hearts were sorely pierced, J Many days we’ve stood beside her, Many nights we’ve o’er her bent, As she lav before us suffering But the ills would not relent. It was sorrow, woeful sorrow And the billows o’er us rolled, When camo the awful separation Os the bodv and the soul, As we saw her all so quickly Breathe her last and fainted breath— It was anguish, deepest anguish, For we knew that it was death. Notwithstanding untold sadness, 'With our hearts so filled with grief Over giving up our loved one, We in Jesus found relief— Found relief by looking upward To the mansions fair and bright; When we saw by faith our loved one In the realms of pure delight. Call her hack ?—no, never, never, Would we rob her of such joy ? Os a home where all is sunshine; Free from sin and its alloy? Shall we grieve about her absence? No, *twill not be very long "TUI we join with her and others, Who compose that happy throng. WBt thou beckon to us loved one? WHt thou at the portals wait? For by grace we are determined To go sweeping through the gate. When in joy again we’ll get thee, And we’ll know as we are known, Where again we’ll gladly join thee, In. the service around the throne. In the State fair held at Raleigh in 1922 Chatham county ranked 40th in exhibits put on there, winning only $37 in prize money. This being won by Messrs. J. W. and H. C. Perry, of Siler City, for agricultural products, the former winning S3O and the latter $7. Wake county ranked first the win ning of premiums with $2,496.75 and Bladen brolght up the rear with 50 cents to its credit. There were 67 counties of the State, a little more than one half the total, represented. A total of $15,287.50 was awarded in premiums for exhibits. The State fair is more than a mere State institution for there were 15 States last year representd at it by exhibits. It is a wonderful agency for county publicity for people from all over the country attend. Such an opportunity for calling the attention to thousands of people representing all parts of the South isn’t often had by the far mers of Chatham and they should ex ert themselves to the fullest in an effort next year to have Chatham county take a more prominent part in the State fair. Every year more and more counties are putting forth greater efforts to ward production of exhibits for the State fair and every years the fair is more representative of the State as a whole for more counties take part in it and it is hoped that Chatham will keep apace wth the other counties by putting on an exhibit worthy of re presentation of this county’s farmers for its farmers rank among the lead ing ones of the State hence its exhib its should rank among the best and largest in the State. vj* | * Pathe Phonographs * * —and— * * Records. * * Ask for a Demonstration. * i * Carter Furniture Co. * ********** NOTICE.
