Gray Head Feels The Same Influence As Carr in Article Last Week. Editor Chatham Record:—ln your paper last week there was an article, headed “Later Love.” There is so much human nature in the piece, I feel as though I would like to shake the hand of the author, C. S. Carr, and tell him the world is ( full of just such men. I And it is nearer no love at all. Yes, I am of the faith that true love never ‘ dies, and were it not for the laws of the state there would be lots of old women replaced by younger ones, j This writer could bring a whoop! ‘ and there would be some to hear me that never get a word of sympathy or love for anything they do and they are doing all their house work, wash ing, cleaning, just as they did when they were young and physically able. Now they are worn with hard work, and gray—raised a large family of children, and the older and more feeble they get, the more they have to do. | Some men seem to think that an old woman needs nothing but wood and water, and that is all that some are getting. I heard one say she had to do so many things and turn so often that she had a swimming in her head most of the time. She never gets to visit, not even near neighbors, trying to keep up with her work, get the meals o ntime and keep her husband from complaining. She never hears him say “do you want to go to church, or to see some of the neighbors or friends.” She never gets from home for a few minutes. He always says there is too much to be done, you haven’t the time to waste. He can go most anytime—nothing to bother, and when someone asks him why his wife did not come, he will tell them she was poorly or some lying excuse to keep the public from knowing the kind of a slave she is. The poor, de jected creature will not tell anyone either. She is ashamed for them to know what she lives in and the hard ships she endures. Nothing pretty in the house—same old furniture they started with years before. | He makes money on many things, but it takes it all to keep him and the stock up; none to get anything for home or the frail old woman who has enslaved her self all these years. No new dresses or anything to cheer the old, gray and worn woman of the home. The woman must keep up every thing for the house herself, pay her preacher and thousands of other lit tle things with a bunch of hens to lay eggs to bear the expense. When the hens don’t lay her revenue stops un til they lay again. No, don’t guess the man I am talk ing about lives over in Africa. Re lives right here in Chatham county,! in Center township, North Carolina. GRAY HEAD. SUCCESS. ’Tis the coward who quits to misfor tune, ’Tis the knave who changes each day, Tis the fool who wins half the battle, Then throws all his chances away. There is little in life but labor, And tomorrow may find that a dream Success is the bride of Endeavor, And luck—but a meteor’s gleam. The time to succeed is when others, Discouraged, show traces of tire, The battle is fought in the home stretch— And won—’twixt the flag and the wire! —John Trotwood Moore.
