Among those not ac- i j counted for was Bishop McKim and j I his staff who were stationed at To kio. SPEED KING MAKING MONEY. Ford Motor Company Profits For Four Months Fitty-Four Million. ! New York, Sept. B.—The Ford Mo tor Company made profits estimated at $54,000,000, equal to about $315 a share on its 172,465 shares of stock, in the four months ended June 30, last according to compilations made from the balance sheet as of that date. The period’s earnings were at the ‘ annual rate of more than $162,000,000 | or about $945 a share, compared with a net profit of $119,000,000 or about $690 a share earned in the year end ed February 28 last.. The profit and loss surplus W’as on June 30 last, amounted to $414,- i 129,158, an increase of more than $54,- 000,000 over that period last year and • $124,000,000 more than that on June 30, last. The Ford Company during August produced 172,000 cars and trucks, com ; pared with 183,735 in July, the de ; cline being attributed to changing ov ! er to new models. September’s output ! is expected to be more than 185,000 units. | GREENSBORO MEN IN A WRECK. ; ! . Narrow Escape From Death in an Au tomobile Sunday. On the sharp turn in the road near ; the home of Mr. Jim Harris, going in the direction of Siler City, from Pitts- i , boro last Sunday, the car driven by ! Garland Alderman and W. F. Hay- j 1 worth, turned over the embankment. They were pinned under the automo bile and but for the fact of the soft dirt, both would have been killed, j It seems thart Hayworth and Aider men were making an effort to pass another car in front of them, and the j lead car decided to stay ahead and a ! race began, with the result that the ! Greensboro boys came too near the , bank and the car caved in, turning ov- j : era couple of times I Hayworth was cut about the head 1 badly, having been pinned under the steering wheel, while Alderman es- 1 caped with bruises. i j The car was badly smashed up but | was temporarily repaired so that it 1 could be towed into home later in the: day. Both Alderman and Hayworth are I from Greensboro and are said to be ' most excellent young men. It was not learned who was driving the car in the lead. , Moral: Never race on a curve. PROVIDING FOR THE ISSUANCE OF MUNICI- FaL buiMUS iJN itui SUM OF ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR THE PURPOSE OF PURCHASING A STREET SPRINKLER FuR THE TOWN OF PITTSBORO. The Board of Town Commissioners of tne Town of Pittsboro, North Caro lina, do ordain and enact. Section I.—That puisuant to the provisions of the Public Laws of iNorih Carolina as set out in Sections 2918 to 2969, inclusive, of the Consoli dated Statutes of North Carolina, as amended and re-enacted by an act en titled, “An Act to Amend and Re enact the Municipal Finance Act, Be ing Sections 2918 to 2961, Consolidat ed Statutes of North Carolina,” as passed and ratified at the Special Ses sion of the General Assembly of North Carolina at the December, 1921, Extra Session, and the amendments thereto, that the Town of Pittsboro, North Carolina, issue and sell its bonds for the purpose of purchasing a Street Sprinkler for the Town of j Pittsboro, which is hereby declared to be a necessary expense of the Town of Pittsboro as being a pait of the cost and expense of maintaining the streets of the said town. Section 2.—That the maximum ag gregate principal amount of the said bonds be ONE THOUSAND DOL LARS ($1,000.00). All details as to the issuance of the said bonds to be fixed by resolution of the Board of Commissioners of the said Town of Pittsboro, as provided by the said law. j Section 3.—That a tax sufficient to pay the principal and interest oi the said bonds shall be annually levied ' and collected by the proper authori j ties of the said Town of Pittsboro. | Section 4.—That a statement of the debt of the Town of Pittsboro has been ! filed with the Secretary of the Board ! of Town Commissioners of the said Town of Pittsboro pursuant to the pro visions of the said law, and is open to public inspection. Section o.—That the assessed valu ation of property as last fixed for municipal taxation by the said Town of Pittsboro as shown by the said | statement is $650,000.00. j Section 6. —That the amount of the net debt of the said Town of Pitts boro outstanding, authorized or to be j be authorized, is $7,300.00. j Section 7.—That this ordinance shall take effect thirty (30) days af ter its first publication, unless in the meantime a petition for its submission to the voters of the said Town of Pittsboro is filed under the provisions of the said law, and that in such event it shall take effect when approved by the voters of the said Town of Pitts boro at an election as provided in the said law. The foregoing ordinance was passed on the 4th day of June, 1923, and was ' first published on the 13th day of September, 1923.
