STUDENTS ENTER AT MONCURE ' Mr. Kennedy Takes Youngsters on a Trip—Local and Personal Notes. Brickhaven, Sept. 10. —Zeb. Har rington, Sam Utley, Salter Utley, Louise Harrington, Eunice Thompson, Mae Dickens, Hilda Utley and Ruth Kennedy were the students from here . who entered school at Moncure last Monday. We wish each one a happy, successful school year. Miss Vera Richardson, who has charge of the fifth grade in the Apex graded school, spent the week-end here with her mother, Mrs. Hettie Richardson. Mr. Clinton Seawell spent the week end with his father near Carthage. 1 He was accompanied by his sisters, Misses Bertie and Mary Roberts Sea well, of Raleigh. I Miss Fannie Johnson, of Morns ville, is spending a while here with relatives. ! Miss Eunice Thompson delightful ly entertained in honor of her six teenth birthday Saturday evening. De licious cake and cream were served and the young people had a most en joyable evening. Many interesting games were played. Mrs. Kelly and little son, Corput, of Wilmington, spent last week at the Boylan Ranch with Mr. Kelly. iVe lat ter holds a responsible position with the Phoenix Utility Co. Mr. O. C. Kennedy motored to Dur ham Saturday afternoon. He was ac companied by Mrs. Kennedy, Miss Dowell and Miss Ruth Kennedy, and had as his guests Misses Annie and Hilda Utley, Frances Thompson, Lou ise Harrington, and Master Hayes Harrington. The afternoon was spent on the skating rink at Lakewood Park. Needless to say everyone had a most delightful time. Mr. Kennedy is always doing something to give pleas* ure to the young people. He is of that enviable type that never grows old, but will always possess the spir it of youth. Miss Kate Marks,of Olivia, who has been spending her vacation at! Wrightsville Beach and Southern | Pines, will come Wednesday to spend the remainder of the week here with her sister, Mrs. R. H. Overby. Mr. Cleron Marks and bride, of Wil mington, spent a short while here last week with relatives. Mrs. Marks was formerly Miss Hilda Morris, of Acme, and is very dainty and attractive. Mrs. Joe Womble and daughter, Lois, spent Saturday and Sunday in this community. j Miss Katherine Knight spent a few days last week with her sifter, Mrs.. Cyrus Brown. Little L. B. Gunter, of Lucama, is here on a visit to relatives. Mr. Allen Jenks, Mrs. N. B. Gun-' ter, Louise Petty, Nora Petty and Miss Fields, visited Mrs. W. L. Moore of Gulf, last week. j . The members of the Sunday school class, taught by Miss Ola Harmon,, | had an enjoyable time at a party given them at the home of Miss Har- j mon Saturday afternon from three to six-thirty. j The class was divided into two teams, the reds and the blues, and there was a captain for each team. There were nine contest given, shpw * ing what those boys and girls could do physically as well as mentally Each team tried its best to win, but , finally the blues received two points j more than the reds, the blues winning the box of candy. After the contests, j they were served some refreshments, consisting of lemonade and cake. Songs, as well as recitations were en i joyed. The program was ended by an in vitation to the grape harbor to eat and enjoy grapes. The members of the class are: Wil j lie Thomas, Alma Lasater, Isabel Pet ty, Lillie Baynes, Eliza and Ike By num, Frank Lasater, Irene and At la? Petty, Elanvay Mclntyre, John Thom as and Palmer Mclntyre. The visitors were Camelia and Ruth Stedman, Liddell Wilson and Harvey Womble and Mrs. G. L. Bynum. BUILD MORE HOMES. Somebody laughed at the little item in The Record last week about fifty "new houses built here could be rented in a short time. But it is true. If more homes were built Pittsboro would soon begin to show much life, mer • chants would gain largely, new school; houses would have to be built, be- j cause fifty families, allowing five to: the family, would increase the popula tion 250, nearly half what the town already has. Joe Thomas Stanley Dead—Other Sil er City Events Siler City, Sept. 10.—Joe Thomas Stanley, aged 53, died at his home three miles from Siler City Sunday morning, after an illness of several weeks. The funeral was held today at Loves Creek Baptist church at 11 o’clock, Rev. Richard S. Fountain, the pastor, conducting the ceremony. His remains were interred in the cemetery at this church. Surviving Mr. Stanley are his wife, one son, James Stanley, one daughter, Mrs. Josie McPherson, of Rocking ham, his mother, Mrs. Polly Stanley, and four brothers, John Stanley, Bright Stanley, George Stanley and Elsie Stanley. The revival at the Methodist church in Siler City came to a close Sun day morning. Sixteen additions to the church was had and the influence of the meeting has done much good. Dr. McCall, superintendent of the southern Baptist work in Cuba made an interesting address at the Bap tist church in Siler City Sunday right, following a baptismal service held by the pastor, Rev. Richard Fountain. Little Miss Roberts, a Cuban girl de lighted the audience with a song ren dered in the Spanish language. Mrs. J. F. Wier, of Greensboro, is visiting her brother W. A. Sumner at Ore Hill and other relatives in that community. Mrs. J. M. Bray left Sunday for Greensboro, where she will spend sev eral days. Miss Jewel Smith has gone to Cas talia, where she will teach this win ter. Dr. and Mrs. C. M. Hutchison who recently returned from Paris, were guests for a few days of Prof, and Mrs. S. J. Husketh, going from here to Princeton university where Dr. Hutch ison will teach modern languages for the coming year. Mrs. E. H. Jordan and sister. Miss Alma Davis, have gone to Rome, Ga., : being called there on account of the I critical illness of their father. AN ICE CREAM SUPPER. There will be an ice cream supper given by the Mt. Gilead B. Y. P. U., at Hackneys Cross Roads, near Mt. Gilead, on the fourth Saturday, Sept ember 22, beginning at four o’clock. The proceeds will go for the build ing of the new Sunday school rooms.
