TELLING THE WORLD ABOUT IT Everybody is subject to some cal umny, some slander, some hate, some backbiting, some depreciation. His reputation is besmirched; his charac ter assailed, his ability questioned, both by those who have, no wish to harm him and those who, through malice, deliberately plot to rum him* Gossip is not always traced to ns source, but it always can be. U n i or " tunatelv, the person who is talked about unkindly or to serious injury seldom hears of what is being said Friends dislike to mention the mean things, and they dislike more the chance of being mixed up m hostile controversy. Favorable gossip is re peated to the person concerned, but it is onlv now and then that calumny and slander come to him, enabling him to track his secret ioe and de fend his integrity. How bad news flies was exempli fied in a specially interesting way by developments in connection with a. run on a bank the other day, at the Stan dard Oil town of Woodriver, 111. A man overheard two men discussing the bank. They said that it was hard to borrow money from the bank except with good security or collateral and this indicated that the bank was in * straits. The man repeated the overheard conversation to friends at a picnic, and the next day there was a run on AIIU tllV/ vtv.j the bank. Detectives first found out from exdted depositors the cause of their alarm and easily traced the talk to the source. They found the thoughtless fellow who had circulated the news, and brought him to the bank and made him stand up on a chair, and tell the crowd what he had said and how he was responsible for the excitement. It is too bad that every calumny and slander, every malicious state ment cannot be followed to the ori ginator. It is too bad that every man and woman who gossips slightingly or hatefully of rival or neighbor is not obliged to stand up before those who have heard the gossip and pub licly confess guilt. No benefits ever result from wrong ing anybody, or even from stating un favorable truth, except when telling the truth of somebody promises to do some good. It is not only charitable to say ill of nobody, but it is good common sense. There is no credit in succeeding by injuring or belittling . somebody else. Say good, but say no ill. It is a sign of nobility of charac ter. to ignore others’ faults and praise their virtues.
