Get them from us. The usual cause of earthquakes is dislocation of the earth along fractur ed lines. There is a fracture line along the coast of California and an other along the coast of Japan. The crust of the earth is constantly in mo tion, up or down, sidewise or twist ing. Millions of years may pass be fore bringing a strain so severe that the strata will slip or crumble along any great fault in the earth’s crust, but when that slip comes there is an earthquake. Usually it is only a frac tion of an inch, or at most a few in ches. In Yakutat, Southern Siberia, a slip of forty feet was once record ed, and the quake was felt all over the world.
