Brickhaven, Dec. 1.7. —Excitement ias been running high in these paits or the past few days. Last Wednes ,ay evening while in Moncure practic g iu r the minstrel to be given Sat .rday evening, a party of young peo ple, including Alma Walden, of hay vood, Bernice Womble, of Moncure, .nd Louisa Harrington, of this place, vere returning to the school building, ifter taking one of the teachers to ier boarding place when the driver if the car lost control ar.d ran into i tree. The car was damaged very lit .le but Alma Walden came very near >eing seriously injured, having been ut and bruised about the face. Sever al stitches were taken in a cut across ;he forehead, and it will be several lays yet before the young lady will be able to resume her school work. While the othrs were badly fright ened, they suffered only minor injur ies. Again on last Friday morning, Mr. Avery Marks crashed into a at the crossing on the Norfolk Southern. The men on the motor car leaped to safety and no one was hurt, but Mr. Mark’s car was partly demol ished. This is an unsafe crossing. A deep cut makes it impossible to see the tracks. Avery’s friends are re joicing that the accident was no more serious. Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Kennedy and Miss Ruth Kennedy were week end guests of relatives in Durham. The Christmas tree for the children of the Brickhaven Sunday school, will be at the school Friday evening, Dec. 21. Misses Bland and Harris have charge of the program and every one is looking forward to an interest ing evening. While the tree is given under the auspices of the Sunday school, the plan is to make it a com munity Christmas tree. Anyone who wish may put presents. on the tree, but all presents except those provided by the Sunday school must be marked “special.” Before another issue of The Record comes, the year 1923 will have pass ed, and with its passing goes anoth er Christmas time —th&t season of the year when people of every nation and every clime—the custom is uni versal—celebrate the passing of the old and rejoice with the coming of the new. Especially do the Christians ob serve this as the birthday of Christ, that matchless leader and teacher of practical religion—the man of Galilee, who demonstrated so nobly the only life worth while, the life of service and sacrifice. It seems at Christmas time that it is well to remember that the same message of love and peace, that came with the first Christmas so long ago, is renewed and if possible, made more emphatic with each pass ing year. If the weary, sin-laden world could only grasp the real spirit of the Christmas season! The sDirit of helpfulness—of cheer, a~d o f “peace on earth, good will toward men.” May each of us on De-emhe 1 * 25, renew our faith in out* and be glad and happy that we too, may serve, and thus walk in the foot steps of the matchless Christ—the Sa viour of men. Teaqi No. 4 was composed of the employees at Buckhorn and at Sanford. This means that Chatham , and Lee county won over all the com , munities in the two Carolinas, where , the C. P. & L. Co., operates. There i were 11 teams competing and No. 4 ■ took first place by a narrow margin i of five shares. The Buckhorn bunch 6 in all, each sold 5 or more shares and ■ a total of 161 shares or $15,100.00 l worth of stock. A total of 47 sales . were made. The people of Chatham i county deserve most of the credit for this achievement, for it is their hard . ; earned dollars invested in a good, safe way thjat has put the thing over, and . we boys here_at Buckhorn, as individ . uals, are sure proud of the way the , people of the community responded. • The Lee county bunch sold $7,500.00 worth of stock, which makes a total • of $32,600.00 for team No. 4—the win , ning team.
