Murphy, Sept. 16.—There was buri ed this afternoon at Murphy, Gracie Graves, the seven year old daughter of S. H. Graves, who came to her death as & result of a scare on the first of September. She went to the opening of school, then attended the speaking of A. W. McLean, and the barbecue following. Uncle Charlie Thompson writes as Follows: “Mr. Editor, I have a color ed neighbor, John Alston, who lives on Mr. as. L. Griffin’s place, who says that he heard one of his hens squall the other day and got his gun and shot a big black mink that had fas tened his teeth in the hen, and killed both mink and hen.” Uncle Charlie says he himself killed a hawk the other day that measured 3 feet from tip to tip. im aim ANNUONCEMENT PARTY. By inadvertence the Record failed to carry, last week, the ‘story of the announcement party given by Mrs. Wade Barber, at which the coming marriage of Miss Emily Thompson to Mr. Harold Jones, of Greensboro, was announced. The date of the happy event is October 21. It was a very pleasant occasion, and the announcement was charmingly made through the medeum of [in scriptions upon cupids attached to streamers and hidden in a bowl of beautiful flowers. The color scheme for the occasion was yellow and pink. Mrs. Beasley, of Fountain, was the guest of honor. Del icious cream, cake, and mints were served by Mesdames Hayes and M. A. Barber. Cross of Corinth, and who is employ ed by the state highway commission at Method, was married last week to Miss Eva Smith of Apex. Mrs. Cross at the time of her marriage was a student at King’s Businss college. They will make their home in Raleigh and Mrs. Cross will continue her work at the college. Mr. and Mrs. Con Harrison of Hartsville, S. C. spent the week-end with Mrs. Harrison’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Buchanon. Con has gone back (o his work but Mrs. Harrison has gone to Clayton to visit Mrs. Har rison’s people for a few days. , Mr. and Mrs. Howard Ferguson of Danville, Va., visited old friends in the community Sunday. Detroit I li THE UNIVERSAL CAR A NEW DEAL IN HARNETT. Sheriff McArtan Couldn’t Stand Sal ary Cut —Fowler Named. Duke, Sept. 19..—Arthur R. Fowler well known farmer, who lives one mile from Duke, will be the Demo cratic candidate for sheriff of Har nett county in the coming November elections. Mr. Fowler was named by the county board of elections Wed nesday in Lillington to make the race for sheriff, J. W. McArtan, of Lilling ton, tendered his resignation which is to take effect January 1, 1924. Sheriff McArtan ran ahead of the majority of the ticket in the Democratic pri mary in June. The sheriff gave as his reasons for declining to run again “that it is the best for the party ,and that he could not give the people of Harnett county justice on the curtailed salary the sheriff will receive from now on.” The salary of the sheriff was placed at S2IOO per annum ,when a county tax collector was appointed by the board of county commissioners on Monday of this week. The election board accepted the sheriff’s resigna tion, and then on motion of Henry Spears, of Lillington, Mr. Fowler was named. M. C. Upchurch, of Lilling ton, was also put in the running for the office. The board named Up church for the position of county game warden. Mr. Fowler was chosen as one of the five commissioners in the late primary, but he resigned this Monday and accepted the nomination for sheriff. His place was taken on the ticket by G. K. Grantham of Dunn who has represented Harnett county in the state legislature. Regardless of the outcome in November, Duke township will provide the next sher iff as both candidates live in about a mile of one another. F. M. McKay, of Duke, is the Republican candidate for sheriff. Henry A. Turlington, who lives on ' rural route No. 2 from Duke, was named tax collector for Harnett coun ty at a special meeting of the county board of commissioners Monday at Lillington. Mr. Turlington was select ed from more than 25 applicants for this office. Mr. Turlington is a resi dent of Grove township. | The tax collector will receive a ' commission on his collections. He will be allowed on th first £so,v --000,000 collected and 1 1-2 per cent on all additional funds collected. The office is appointive. The new collec tor is one of the best known farmers in Harnett ,being proprietor of the Turlington stock farm, which raises some of the prize winning exhibits shown at many state and county fairs.
