AVENT FERRY BRIDGE .••>»*■ • i -Survey -Approved by Commfeaioner • jlaij —Cliatharu laii-Ldiitiin --j j lui-r One-fourth of -C u.hi y's Taxes—A) nprecedciilex Low Water . j Corinth, Dec. B.—News from,.Cor inth this time will have to includel some items several weeks old. We have acquired the bad habit of our neighbor, Mr. J. D. Mclver, and don’t stay at home much. At any rate it will not be possible to write every week from now on. • j Now that the Cole and Woody cases have both been settled we and the ! editor should. be able to write oqr '“stuff” without cutting at each other, but if we do drew fire again wp will vigorously defend our premises and beat him at his own game if we can. (We don’t recall a line we wrote in connection with either of those cases that wouldn’t have been written if our Buckhorn correspond ent had bee» dead*—Editor.) , ( Miss Catherine Hacknev. daughter of Mr. .T. J. Hackney of Moncure, has taken Mrs. ;W. W. Horton’s place, in our Corinth school, Mrs. Horton hav- * ing resigned on account of her health. | Miss Ellen . Mclver seems to be the. moving spirit in this new venture About two months ago the commis sioners from Chatham and l>o conn- ‘ ties met in Pittsboro and delegated i a commi +f ee to call on Mr. John!, Snrunt Hill and ask the service of his department in makipg a ’V'clmd-. narv and ostironte on tbo ,pro« oo<?od h’vh^ T^' rT bridge at A P’eTTv to be built on a fifitv-fifty ba c, ’‘ 5 bv Chatham and Ter. with ▼'ossiblv aome hoTn ■P~o»n th<» state. The “handle” to. that.hum County (look at the map * ' ! a, a n it) hqs become an I iwpoiEu.t licn.ue. About cne-fourth ! ° r taxes in Chatham county aire i paid'from this little “handle” sOc ; tion of 25 sq. mi. (ask your tax col lector). A year or so ago Lee county proposed that if we would “amputate” this handle from Chatham and graft it on to Lee that they would build our bridge, and in our extremity we came i near doing just that. But that would have given old Chatham a hard fall, a permanent injury, and no in surance. so. better judgment pre vailed. The Chatham county officials proposed a bridge to Lee county on a fifty-fifty basis’/ This seemed like * a fn>r proposition to most of us. Chathr'm would the great cor porate wealth within the handle hut an outlet would be made into Lee county that will make Sanford our rarest, big trading 'center. It would pTcn,; the state capitol some seven miles nearer Sanford apd from 10 to 15 r.:i!;s nearer half the people in Lee county. ! With these facts before us the wondef is not that the bridge is really i to be built, but that 'it was not built long ago. The county attorneys of i Chatham and Lee by virtue of their office will have much to do with the | preliminaries in getting this work , started. Let them step on the gas '■and shew some speed. | Never in the history of. the electric ! power industry in the South has there J over been such a shortage of river water for operating water power {plants. Here it is the middle of De t comber and i the Cape Fear and .its tributaries still dry. . Plenty of to koep the ground moist and r6‘ads slick but slow and - all soaking'.in., | None of th.e water reaches the rivqrs. Yet the C. P. and L. Co. has not cur * tabled one of its customers yet. It has been extremely fortunate in hav ing the big Cape Fear steam plant come in just 'in time to handle the heavy demand for power due to the ) drought. This plant has also been able to help out neighboring nower concerns that were caught without a steam reserve. > FREE CLINIC • 1 There-pv’ll be held a free clinic for \ cripples, infants ‘and adults at Lee l ! county court house, Sanford, on Fri \ j day, December 18. All in need of ex -11 rmination or treatment are urged to f! attend. Treatment in the clinic wi'l l be free, including such work as plaster l costs and braces. The clinic will be I held under the auspices of the San s ferd Rotary Club. Mr. C. M. She had been | an invad'd for five months, in bed, | but declining for several years. She I was Miss Carrie Harmon before mar- I; riage. She has livpd with her f ! .daughter, Mrs. J. D. Mrs. : Baker is her only living child. Road Commissioners’ Expenditures A glance over the copy of the min utes of the road commissioner’s last meeting indicates that the sum total of bills ordered paid at that meeting was about 25,300, going in the school was about C 0,200, going in the several usual' ways. A credit of $312.48 is registered, the amount received from Hr. R. J. Johnson for work by the road force upon the Lanins grove property, preparing it for tne recent auction sale.
