McDaniel of Durham is visiting her daughter, Mrs. Latt Poe near Siler City. Mr. and Mrs. Graham Connell of Raleigh spent the week-end with Mr. Connell’s home folk. The supreme court denied a new trial to Pearl Mitchell, under sen tence for the murder of Wm. Fogle man. Mr. And Mrs. W. B. of Washington, D. C., spent a few days with Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Con nell last week. Miss Mary Griffin, a teacher in the school for the blind at Raleigh, is spending the holidays with her brother Mr. J. L. Griffin. Mr. Carlyle Brooks, who is a member of the highway engineer ing force located here, visited home folks at Roxboro Sunday. Miss Meriel Grove, of New Bern, who taught the past session at Mooresville, came in Sunday to visit her friend Miss Coltrane. Mrs. W. F. Crutchfield, of Had ley township, last week underwent what is thought to be a successful operation for incipient cancer, at Watt’s hospital. Mr. J. J. Reynolds of Merry Oaks was over here Monday and reports crops in good shape over there. He served as Federal court juryman last week at Raleigh. Since buying the Cornwallis Fill ing Station, Mr. J. T. Bland has improved the appearance of the place much by erecting a neat fence about the flower plat in front of it. Mr. Walter Poe and family of Cheraw, S. C., came on from the Poe Reunion and took supper with Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Bland arid spent the night with Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Poe. Chatham has a good crop of peaches and apples this year. Fine Chatham grown peaches were on the Pittsboro market Monday, less than three months from the time a two-foot snow covered the county. Frying-size chickens are also get ting ripe. The regular monthly meeting of the Woman’s Auxiliary of St. Baratholomew’s will be held in the church Monday afternoon, June 6th at four o’clock. Every member is urged to be present, this being the last meeting till September. THE CHATHAM RECORD Miss Lucile Farrell is visiting her grandmother at Moncure. Moore’s Bridge is open for traf fic. It has been mad ea road bridge. Mrs. Mattie Thompson visited her daughter, Mrs. W. H. Jones in Greensboro during the week end. Former Principal Nolan is mov ing his household goods this week to Old Fort, where he is to be prin cipal of the school. Messrs. Roy Guinn, “Red” Rober son, Jim May, Billie Johnson, and Joe Wortz visited Wilmington and Topsail Sound during the week end. Mr. Edgar Moore of Edenton spent Sunday night with Mr. J. T. Poe, on his way to Greensboro, where his daughter Elizabeth was to graduate from Greensboro Col lege this week. Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Bland ran down to Salemburg Thursday of last week to bring home their niece Miss Carrie Guinn, who was one of the graduates of Pineland Col lege. Miss Essie Peterson took the opportunity to go with the Blands to Sampson, where she has been visiting her sister, Mrs. F. J. Faison. Mr. L. E. Thomas of Wilmington was up last week making plans to build a brick-veneer cottage on his father’s old homestead near Gum Springs Baptist church. Mr. Thomas has bought the interests of all the other children in his father’s farm and will build the residence suggested with a view of returning one day to the old home county. Chatham folks will be glad to have him come back home. The date for the beginning of paving work on the Pittsboro- Chapel Hill highway is bringing several good men to Pittsboro. The rock crushing and sand hauling had already engaged a number of others. Arriving last week were Mr. H. C. Hennigh, superintendent of the paving work, who wish his family will occupy the house vacat ed by Principal Nolan. Mr. F. F. Killian is here as bookkeeper and is at the Blair hotel. Mr. James L. Griffin is quite a busy man this week. He has had to attend a meeting of the board of trustees of the Eastern Carolina Training school at Greenville and a similar meeting of the trustees of Wake Forest College. He was par ticularly concerned with being at Wake Forest today when President Poteat is to deliver his final bac calaureate address to the graduat ing classes of the old college.
