PAGE SIX MAN FINNED UNDER HIS BLAZING AUTO BURNED TO DEATH Bascosn Cagls,, Os Pinebluff, Meets Hoirifele Death On Glendcn Road GASOLINE TANK HURSTS (The Moore County NewsJ Lc A overtook Bascom Cagle, a car penter, of Pinebluff, late Sun day afternoon, when the car in which he was riding alone over age-Glendon highway, pinning nun Uuueiuli&w ~ t j>, literally cremated in the flames following the crash. Charred and blackened beyond recogni tion, he was identified only af ter a sister, who happened to pass the scene of the tragedy, recognized as her brother’s the remains of the car, bits of cloth ing and J| belt, the buckle of which tin ueau ...... „ i.. tial. ~ Just what caused the car to over turn is a wjace.y, as c.xc.e .tie known eye witnesses to the acci dent. It w’as only after the wreck ed machine k*' 1 """ : that a car occupied by colored men reached tb~ ar»n though tb*t they heard cries from beneath it. Although they tried to rescue the doomed man from the fiery inferno, they were unsuccessful in their at tempts at succor on account of the intense heat. The gasoline tank had exploded and the flames, thus fed, were leaping* high into the air, and it was impossible within a few min utes to even reach the car, to say nothing of lifting its weight and re leasing the imprisoned man. Onlookers Horrified Other cars soon reached the scene and in a short while a crowd of sev eral hundred people gathered. Al though the negroes had stated that they heard someone beneath the car exclaim “all right, boys, let’s go!” when they attempted to move it, there was some doubt expressed as to there being anyone beneath the machine. However, workers soon partially extinguished the flames and when the car was lifted the stiil sizzling* carcass of a man crum pled to the ground. Onlookers stood aghast at the horrible specta cle. Both hands had been eaten off by the flames; the upraised stumps of arms indicated that the victim had attempted even in the throes of death, to shield his face from the blaze. It was a question, at first, whether the dead was a white man or negro, his body was so disfigured and mutilated, but a physician soon pronounced him to have oeen a white man. As if angered at being cheated of completely* consuming their vic tim, the flames roared, in fitful gusts, long after the dead man had been rescued. A brother-in-law of the deceased happened upon the scene as specu lation to the identity of the acci dent victim was running riot and immediately 7 recognized in the grue some, blackened thing that had been a man, the remains of his kinsman, who had visited in his home a few hours previous. In fact, the de 4 us ed w r as returning to Pinebluff, where he lived with his aged mother, fol lowing the visit to his sister’s home. Mr. Cagle was well known in this section for an estimable man and a good citizen. . Many w 7 ere the regrets expressed at his tragic pass ing. A veteran of the World War he had served a number of enlist ments in the L T . S. Army. His body w’as interred in the cemetery 7 at Beth lehem church on Monday 7 in the pres ence of a a concourse of his friends and relatives. About Things Vou bn h.tfag. II D> _ Laryngitis One of the most common affec tions oi tne throat. It may be acute or cnicnic. ihe latter form is rare, I’m glad to say, because it st- iKvs ten or to me—the thought of tuberculosis of th elarynx. My purpose in i.ns sketch .5 to deal with the t.coti form only. This varie- from slight hoarse ness with no fever, to tne most pro found illness, with loss of voice and dangerous temperature. Diphtheria and croup are tne most formidable of throat ailments of childhood. An old author or.ee said that croup is attended by loud, rasping* cough;. seldom a cough in d. pirn her.’e. That was when diagnosis depended entire ly on physical signs. Hie first symptom of laryngitis in any of its forms is—-loss of the voice. This v ils us that the disease is in the larynx—in the vocal box. k is the s gral for immediate ac tion; get the physiol an at once. Mouth breathers a e by far the most likely to ;;c attuehed. To take young children suddenly out of a warm house, into zero temperature, without warm muffler, or wrap placed tightly over the breathing passages, is to invite trouble; the Mange from warm to cold should be gradual. Teach children to lr**ea • through the nostrils, if sudden ly exposed to cold; they will never •orget it. And, be sure there arc ; no adenoids there to obstruct. i Prevention is golden here. Keep ! he child's bowels ‘freely open. Re- j juire plenty of drinking* water, and of tubreculosis of the larynx. My the bedrooms wed during the day. i would not house children too close y—cultivate tolerance for pure, out door air. but wrap the body warm; especially, keep feet and legs warm and dry. Until the doctor comes, treat the victim with sweating and inhalations of turpentine vapor, eu calyptus oil, or from slaking lime. What this country needs, along wiih a good five-cent cigar, is a five eent appetite. * The “sticks” is that region where a thief is just a thief instead of a master criminal. So very many have been doing five uays’ work and scattering it over six days. v ' - < There’s one Progressive Senator, not easy to handle. He doesn’t eat breakfast. A woman doesn’t really begin to have faith in a man until other peo ple lose it. LEGALS ADMINISTRATOR’S NOTICE Having duly qualified as admin istrators cf the estate of Mrs. Lois A.
