MESS HILDA UTLEY
A sad death was that of Miss j
Utley, youngest daughter of Mrs.
ley of Brickhatve, who died at Mary
Elizabeth Hospital, Raleigh, last
Thursday afternoon, and was buried
in the family plot. !
Miss Utley was in the flower of
youth and was a young woman of
promise. Many readers of the Rec
ord will recall the letters to the Rec
ord a few years ago from her sist
er Miss Utley, who now is mpeloyed
at Samarcand Manor. Surviving is
another sister, Miss Utley, and four j
brothers, all of whom were present j
for the funeral.
MRS. W. M. BECKWITH
Mrs. Wm. Beckwith, as highly re
spected citizen of the New Elam
community, of upper Cape Fear
township, died Saturday morning,
at the age of 68, after a n illness of
a week, though his health had not
been good for the past year.
The burial was at New Elam
Christian church, of which church
he had long been a faithful slid
consecrated member, and for the past,
two years a deacon. y
The funeral was preached by his j
pastor, Rev. J. Fuller Johnson, who [
attested to his high character and I
Christian worth.
Mr. Beckwith leves a widow, six
sons and two daughters, the most of
whom reside in this county. His
wife w?'s Miss Arzilla Goodwin.
A good citizen has gone.
MRS. MARY J. MITCHELL
Mrs. Mary J. Mitchell passed away
peacefully, though rather suddenly,
at the home of her daughter Mrs.
Bettie Cranford in Williams town
ship Jan. 29. Her sudden death came
as a shock to relatives and friends,
though she had been in declining
health a year or more. Her funer
al services were conducted by Rev.
W. F. Massie of the Methodist
church. The burn'l was in the j
O’Kelly cemetery.
Her parents were David and Sarah }
lane Wicker of this county. Early j
in life she married David Mitchell, j
who died eleven years ago. To the j
union were born eleven children, j
seven of whom survive, namely, Wil- j
iam Mitchell of Durham and J. F.
Mitchell of Williams townshin, and :
Mrs. Lizzie Pattishall, of Bonsai, j
Mrs. G. C. Mendenhall of New Hope j
township, Miss Mittie Mitchell of j

ford. There are 17 grandchildren

Mrs. Rose Lawrence, an aged
and highly esteemed lady of fthe

township, passed away Sunday af

She was the widow of John Law
' rence, who died a number of years
ago. She has reared a large and
creditable family of sons and daugh
ters, all of whom were present at
the funeral. Surviving are her two

ters, Mrs. Rollins, of Miaimi, Fla.,
