PAGE TWO CHATHAM RECORD O. J. PETERSON Editor and Publisher SUBSCRIPTION PRICE: Dne Year $1.50 olx Months 75 THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 1929 FIFTY BUSHEL CORN, ETC. Apropos an editorial in these columns on the opportunities in Chatham for profitable rais ing of chickens, hogs, and goats, we would call the atten tion of our farmer readers to the county agent's figures on the success of ten demonstra tions of hog-feeding in this county. Mr. Shiver makes the point that the principal means of making profit in growing pork is in increasing the prod uct of corn per acre. And right here we wish to insist that ev ery Chatham county farmer plant no acre of corn from which he may not reasonably expect fifty bushels. There is no more work in making fifty bushels to the acre than in making ten. A few acres of fifty-bushel corn beats a large acreage of ten-bushel corn, and one has the extra acreage for pasturage, and if set to Ber muda grass (we name the eas iest thing to grow), that acre age will help prepare the hogs for the corn eating period. Fifty-bushel corn and the clov ers, grasses, sweet potatoes, and rape and rye, will make hog-raising a profitable indus try in Chatham county. Again, we should like to mention, in ; addition to the openings for j the production of chickens, j hogs, and goats, the availabil ity of profitable sheep and turkey raising in this county. I Talk to Mr. R. E. Harris of New Hope township about tur keys and sheep. <*> RECORDER’S COURT NEEDED The infrequency of sessions of superior court for the trial of criminal cases and the ap parently increasing number of such cases, together, make the establishment of a recorder’s court here essential to speedy w — ■ 1 -" 1 ■■»■ ■ ' lll ' I SF” PILOT THEATRE PITTSBORO, N. Men were in jail months be fore the last term of court and on rather unimportant charges. All those months the county had to bear the expense of boarding them, while the term in jail awaiting trial was as much punishment as would have been in some cases award ed them if the trial had im mediately followed their ar rest. Consequently, not only was the board bill lost, but whatever the guilty might have earned on the roads for the county or paid in fines was for feited. But it is conceivable that an innocent man be unable to give bond and have to lie up in jail, and as all accused are presum ably innocent till proven guil ty, a speedy trial in such cases is a matter of constitutional rights. With a recorder given juris diction over ths minor cases, both criminal and civil, and court held every two weeks, the expenses of the adminis tration of the courts should be considerably decreased, and speedy justice rendered both guilty and innocent. Moreover, as there are submissions in most cases, it would require no LOOK WHO’S COMING FAMOUS CAROLINA TAR HEELS This bunch of young musicians are pleasing their audi ences wherever they are playing. Marshall or Chase to meet out a fit measure of punishment. Besides, it would be permissi ble for any defendant who wished to have his case tried before a jury. Also, in cases of dissatisfaction appeal to the superior court would be avail able. Such a court could be run at little more cost, it would seem, than a justice’s court. The county commissioners have the authority to establish a recorder’s court, and The Record suggests immediate consideration of the matter by that honorable body. Fall acknowledges that he lied to keep the Harding ad ministration from being criti cised for what he foresaw would be considered a bribe if discovered. But even yet it is hard to conceive of the poor old fellow’s selling his country outright. But he has a year in prison and a SIOO,OOO fine im posed upon him, and whatever his degree of sin, at his age the punishment is great, and at any age the fall from a high place to a penitentiary cell is a terrible penalty. The lesson is that public servants must be above even suspicion, as all other men should be. The answer is that in the testing of cars every possible factor that might affect a car’s performance is considered by General Motors* engineers. So precise are some of the tests that even the difference between a sunny day and a partly cloudy day — or between a north breeze and a r south breeze—is considered. With each day’s record of the mechanical tests applied to a caron the roads and hills of the Proving Ground is included a report of the exact weather conditions prevailing. The engineers then can know how weather affects performance, and can have a comparable record so that every car tested is given an equal opportunity to prove itself under exactly the same conditions. Advance models of ail the cars listed below were proved at the Proving Ground before they were introduced to the public.
