PAGE SIX THE RAILROAD MERGERS (From The Hamlet News-Messenger) Some twenty-five years ago President Roosevelt initiated legislation designed to break up some of the big combines and trusts then existent and to prevent others from forming* and ever since that time the anti-trust laws have stood as a protecting wall around inde pendent business and has kept the big corporations from gob bling up all the little ones. Now the interstate com merce commission, operating under mandate from congress, has proposed a giant merger scheme for the railroads, which would place all of the lines in the United States in nineteen groups, any one of which will be bigger than the big trusts which Roosevelt fought in the interests of small business. The nineteen trunk systems proyid frh for are called competitive, and there are certain pro visions for the mutual us>e of terminal facilities by all roads needing them that may prevent one line from freezing out the others. But no amount of ex planation can change the fact ; that in effect the proposed - scheme takes the smaller and weaker railroads and hands them over bodily to stronger lines. In many instances the very thing is done which the ( big roads have wanted to do but w ere estopped by the anti trust laws. The commission announces hearings on the plan early in the new year and it will cer tainly be opposed by many af fected roads, and almost as certainly it will be changed be fore put into effect. Congress will have to act, repealing some present statutes and en acting others before the scheme can be carried out. Already there has developed strong op position in congress to the pro posal, so it may be years before anything comes of it. Mean time conditions will have so changed, centers of commerce will have shifted, and the in terests of big money will have become different, and the scheme w T ill be impractical and out of date before it can be put in operation. Instance the val uation of railroads conducted by the commission during the past ten years and not yet finished. Valuations arrived at ten years ago are useless, so millions of dollars of public money has been spent and no good achieved. Interest here is in the Sea board. With all respect to the present controlling officials of that great system, the Sea board and the southeast now needs its Warfield. Seven or eight years agp Mr. Warfield saw this very thing coming and began to get ready for it. He built new lines in Florida and acquired others in Florida and Georgia extending the Sea board system to such propor tions as to make it a key sys tem in any consolidation proj ect. Collapse of the so-called “Florida boom” delayed the work, but these close to Mr. Warfield contended all the time that he did not change his plan for the Seaboard. His death, however, ended the hope for further extension. Followed, a periqd* of financial stringency.- ~.the Seaboard iyid only lately the 2 dent,, PowSH • It ie-'nnfortunate .ttuit-. ..C/ : *feport ' boo n, pub I i die d bes or "* r itsen.* Th eOannoline this time is bound .♦create uneasiness on. part of em- L&>jees pf the Seaboard?* ¥his ’ wfll *ejf£ct of break- the morale and esprit de corps*of who keep the wheels turning. As stated above it may de years before the suggested 3rogram goes into effect, and it is not likely that it ever will de effective without material changes in the set-up. $ — WORLD WAR “LAST” We have heard much about the World war “firsts,” but Lieut.
