ifWHRSDAY, DECEMBER 25, 1930. ,* *********** *| ’ town and * ' COUNTY BRIEFS # *************** The snow caused the Pittsboro children and' those of prob ity half the state to get their ffistmas holidays two or throe Javs earlier than scheduled. The poor rabbits have caught zip the week. The boys could catch them without gun or trap. Coming from Siler City Saturday with the mail man we saw him buy three or four dozens at 15 cents each. Miss Camilla Powell is home for the holidays from Lexington. Miss Sadie Johnson came in from Greensboro for the holidays with her parents; also Miss Pearl John son from Appalachian Teachers’ College, Boone. Misses Annie Bynum from N. C. q \y., Alma Dailey from Duke Uni versity, Louise Brooks and Cathe rine Johnson, teachers at Bell’s, Sankie Perry, teacher at Maxton, and Lucile Farrell teacher at St. Paul’s, Louise Petty, teacher at Moncure, and other young ladies off at school as students or teaching in other towns, are home for the holi days. i The college boys are at home, as ' are the girls, and the Record hopes ; tihev will have a fine Christmas. * ' l Misses Mary and Georgia Brewer spent a few days in Dunham with relatives. The Record would appreciate a list of your Christmas guests for the next issue. Mrs. Eliza Jenkins, one of the. Confederate pensioners, died at her home near Goldston Sunday and was buried at Gulf Monday. The Record has too little information to go into details. While she had : not received her pension voucher be fore her death, the family will get this half-year’s quota in due time. A session of county court Mon day, served to present Julius French, John A. Rives, and Turner John son, all colored, with sentences of six months on the roads for viola tion of the prohibition laws. The boys are from Bea rOreek town ship, or at least from the neigh borhood of Bonlee, according to Mr. W. T. Brooks. Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Faison, Miss Peggy Lou, and Mr. and Mrs. N. R. Bass are expected to be at the Pet erson home for a few days. Mr. J. J. Ferebee, Jr. ,of Norfolk, recently visited his sister, Mrs. Wade Barber. Mrs. Robert M. Burns has closed her home here for the winter and accompanied her son, Mr. A. M. Burns, Saturday to his home in Roxboro, where she will remain several weeks before proceed nig to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Winchester, at Monroe. Mrs. Herbert E. Norris and littlei granddaugh ters who have been spending some time with Mrs. Norris’s mother, Mrs. Burns, have gone to their tome in Raleigh. It is gratifying to be able to report Mrs. Burns in robust health, considering her mark ed age. We shall be looking for her return next spring or summer. That was snow enough for us, and the thirty inches Reidsville is re ported to have had would have been too much of a good thing. Even Durham is reported as having about twice as much as Pittsboro had, which was seven or eight inches, we judge. A thirty-indh snow at the beginning of winter is likely to have remnants left two months from now, unless big rains take away the masses heaped in shady dells. Chatham is quitting cotton. Gin ning up to Dec. 1 were only 4,060 bales, and Mr. M. H. Woody, cot ton census man, says that the yield this year is much better than last, but that the cut in acerage is likely to reduce the year’s produc tion to that of last year, the lowest in many years. MORE ABOUT STATE NEWS Starts on Page One Governor Gardner former Gover nor Cameron Morrison, who nosed him. out of the gubernatorial nomi nation 10 years ago, to the United States Senate to succeed Senator Overman, deceased. Senator Morrison, as his first official act, approved the appoint ment of his neighbor, fellow church and townsman, Frank R. McNinch, read of the anti-Smith group in as a memlber of the Federal rower Commission, after calling him a sorry Democrat.” Senator F. M. Simmons led his successful opponent, Josiah William tfailey, down the Senate aisle and seated him in his seat for a time, meanwhile chatting pleasantly with Senator Simmons presented the credentials and the person of his ormer friend and recent political TT nemy > Cameron Morrison, to the United States Senate. Senator-elect Bailey’s opposition, _ a PPpantment of Mr. McNinoh was i erridden by the approval given' Senator Morrison, who, although 1° days ago, will be North Ra i lnas sen^or Senator over Mr. smi i wbo was nominated in June 2, eie cted in November, r *° rmer Governor Angus W. For ! Morrison is popular with a large j element, worked and spent money in the couties in the recent campaign -and has many followers in the next General Asse’bly who could at least have annoyed Gardner in his leg islative program. Now they will cer tainly look at it with friendly eyes. Senator Morrison’s stand on the McNinch appointment will certain ly bring to him a large part of the formerly estranged anti-Smith Sim mons element, more in numbers, probably, than will be estranged in the Bailey following. Bailey can ill afford to break with Morrison, his senior in the Senate and his ally in the recent Bailey-Simmons and Bailey-Pritchard campaigns. “Quite probably there exists to day $500(000,000 of untaxed in tangible value in foreign corpora tions doing business in North Caro lina”, Attorney General D. G. Brum mitt said, in an address on “Re adjustments in Taxation” before a group of State University students last Friday. Tracing the changes in conditions in North Carolina from agricul tural to largely industrial ectivi ties since 1900, Mr. Brummitt held that changes in the taxation meth | ods must follow. While domestic corporations are paying taxes on their intangible assets, the State’s taxing system is not prepared to reach it in the so-called foreign corporations and should be modern ized, he stated. “Readpustments in taxation which distribute the burden more evenly wil aid in any effort toward agri cultural and industrial rehabiluta taon,” he said. __ E. B. Jeffress, publisher of the Greensboro Daily News and now also of the Greensboro Recor, is mentioned as a possibble candidate for Governor in 1936, taking place with other prospects, including A. H. Graham, Hillsboro; Thomas C. Bowtie, Jefferson; Thomas L. John son, Asheville, and T. L. Kirkpat rick, Charlotte. Mr. Jeffress served as mayor of Greensboro and was elected this fall to the 1931 General Assembly from Guilford. Just what attitude his “brethern of the press’ will take toward such a candidacy is proble matical. Automobiles killed 102 persons in North Carolina in November, bringing the death toll for the first 11 months of the year to 690, the same number killed in the 12 months of last year. Last month’s deaths were four less than the high mark of 106 in December, last year. Thirty-five, or more than one-third of those killed in Novem ber were pedestrians, the report of Director Sprangue Silver shows. Drunken drivers were responsible for nine deaths and 24 injured. The Machinery Act “requires an actual valuation on all property, real as well as (personal”, and per mits no exceptions, Attorney General Brummitt has held in reply to in quires. Some counties lhave re cently made valuations and want to adopt these as the 1931 quadrien nial assessments, or want to make horizontal increases or decreases of former valuations, he said. He points out that the General Assem bly, meeting in January, can change the method and make a new plan, however, and suggests that county officials in such counties take up the proposal with their county re presentatives.
