The hoLd ys are approaching, when the nsnal custom of making presents prevails, and it often times happens that persons who desire to make handsome gifts have not the means commensurate with that desire, so that here is an opportunity for tbe small sum of $3,00 to confer a listing benefit upon the receipients. ( Parents and others should send for sample j copies to Scribner A Co. Nw York. A Busy Flacw. We were gratified on yesterday, while passing through Swift Creek, to witness the activity which was apparant at that little farmer's centre. Produce was coming in quite freely, and a visit to the large triple establishments of Mr. Wm. Cleve more than repaid us fur the time spent. A large, well stocke't store, with busy rierks an extensive steam cotton ginning establishment and a A No. 1 Turpentine manufactory, all in full blast, attest to the business qualifications of that gentleman and w came awy feeling satisfi d that although banks may break and stocks Fmnsh the holders into bankruptcy and the panic make m n act madly, there is a back bone to the country in this and similar places which cannot be broken and consequently the country is safe. It was our good fortune to attend the lecture delivered by CoL Waddell at the New Berne Theatre last night, and we were well repaid for our time. The lecturer was introduced by Major John Hughes, who alluded in a most feeling and touching manner to the visitation of the pesti lence, Yellow Fever, to this city in 18G 1, and made a strong appeal in behalf of the Memphis sufferers, for who.-e benefit the lecture was de livered. The subject of the Colonel's lecture was "The Early History of North Carolina," and the proofs adduced by him of its beiug the birth place of the first animals, as well as where gold was first found, were undeniably strong ; of its settlement or occupation by Europeans or Irishmen long prior to the discovery of this country by Columbus, entirely convincing if Icelandic history is worth auytbing whatever. A good audience was well entertained, and went away delighted with the lecture and prais ing the lecturer. s Thomas Nichols, Upholsterer and Mattrass Mker, Craven Street, next door to Barber Shop, . tf. union jow and forevei onJj BSBRE", N. Baptist Convention ; -The Missionary Baptist State Confection met, according to appointment, in its seventh annual session, at the First Baptist Church in this city, continuing until the 18th inst, when it adjourned. - - -wrl ; : - The manifestation of. the Spirit of Christ per vaded, the members, and we have reasons to hope much good will be accomplished in the end. We are thankful to God to Bee the ability for preaching the gospel so manifested in many of our young Baptist Ministers, and the noble qualification they possess as Laborers in the Vineyard. May God speed their course in the christian race, that much good may be done through them by preaching the true gospel and rightly dividing,, the Word of Truth. . These young men have been trained to the preaching of the gospel in one of our first-class colleges, founded in Raleigh, N. Q-, for the'purpoee of educating young men for the gospel ministry, and I would advise all young men who have the gospel ministry in view to attend Shaw Colle giate Institute at Kaleigh, which is conducted by Rev. H. M. Supper, Class Teacher. The members of the First Baptist Church re ceived great honor from tbe delegates that met in their church for providing so well for the delegates, as becoming good christians, having a eare for the disciples of Jesus. Great credit w as conferred upon Rev. B. B. Spicer, our Min ister, for his admirable management. A com mittee, appointed for the purpose, met the del egates each day at ' the depot, and conducted them to the quarters assigned them. Every thing was well managed, and it was announced by Rev. E. Eagles that this was the best of the annual sessions ever held, and that New Berne is. tbe place for good accommodations. A committee of three was appointed to ar range the exercises for each night and designate who should preach in the different churches. Every church in New Berne and James City was supplied, without regard to denominational differences, and we were glad that our Baptist brethren were received with warm hearts by the brothers and sisters of the Methodist denomi nation. Our aim is to endeavor to harmonize and unite the christian religion. S. B. B. STATS. Miss Fanni Fisber. the accomplished North Carolina au horess, is engaged Ujon an other novel.
