Another interesting
point—this time about "Davy
Crockett—is being featured in
the current Chilean natural Ni
trate advertl’sement which is
published in this paper. Crock
ett’s hand to hand fight at the
Alamo where he met his death
In 1836, Is pictured.
That tragic massacre at the
Alamo in San Antonio, Tex., oc
curred just six years after Chi
lean Nitrate was first used to
fertilize Southern crops. The
first shipload of Chilean natural
Nitrate came to the U. S. In
ISSff—104 years ago. It has
been used steadily ever since
and has become almost the back-
b o n e of successful farming
throughout the entire South.
“Davy” Crockett’ is known for
the fact.s and fables of his marks
manship, for his colorful life, for
his many wilderness exploits.
But he was also a humorist and
a piiilosopher. Someone once
criticized his spelling and his
grammar. That made “Davy”
laugh.
“Haw.” he answered, “while
critics were learning ther gram
mar and their spelling, I and
Doctor Jackson, L.L.D., were
fighting in the wars. We had
more inyportant matters to at
tend to than crossin’ t’s and dot-

things.’’
Crockett’s spectacular death in
the Alamo was exactly the death
he desired. Many years before he
died he wrote: "Die like a brave
‘man. And I know not whether,
■ in the eyes of the world, a bril
liant death is not preferred to
an obscure life of rectitude. Most
! men are remembered as they
died, and not as they lived. We
gaze with admiration upon the
glories of the setting sun, yet
scarcely bestow a passing glance
upon the noonday splendor.’’
