WELCOME ROompletlon of construction of ^'nilroad from Winston-Salem to a iK>int within one mile of the ohprthouse in Wilkeshoro marked the beginning of North Wilkes- ta#o. Wilkes county subscribed ,000 for the railroad com- fOBy, then known as Richmond oad Danville and later the South ern Railway company, to con struct the branch and the con tract said to within one mile of the Wilkes courthouse. According to the survey and plan of construction the railroad was constructed along the north side of the Yadkin river and when it reached the place where North Wilkesboro depot is BOW located it was within one SBlle of the Wilkes courthouse Md there construction ended and B town was (born. Captain Alexander B. Andrews, executive vice president of the then Richmond and Pcnville rail way company, was responsible for North Wilkeshoro being first named Gordon. Captain Andrews served on the staff of General James B. Gordon, of Wilkes, in the War Between the States and was a close friend of the Gener al, whose home was just across the Reddies River from what is now North Wilkeshoro. Captain Andrews said the new town should be named Gordon and that was the name of the postoffice, which was later changed to North Wilkeshoro. Incidentally, J. R. Finley was postmaster when the name was Gordon. Captain Andrews came to North Wilkeshoro when the railroad construction was finished and in spected the road. He also execut ed the necessary contracts and papers with the Wilkes county boara of commissioners while here in his private car, a picture wotmen things: marriage, chicks, men pitched the barn, Or argued politics. These bonds were signed and delivered to Colonel An drews. However, it was the a- greement that the County of Wilkes was to have one hundred thousand dollars stock in the Richraond-Danville Railroad Co. in exchange for their bonds but the stock in the Richmond-Dan- ville Railroad Company was nev er delivered to this County of Wilkes but within a few months the Richmond-Danville Railroad Company was put In the hands of receivers and finally taken over by what is now known as the Southern Railway Company.
