By FRANKUK BANKER
With A U. 8. Infantry Division
Inside the Siegfried Line, Oct. 9.—
A fearleae 2S-year old farm l>oy
from Pores Knob, N. C- who, kept
a German garrison awake halt the
night by yelling like a manlae and
firing a captured madilne gna,
laconically informed his company
commander today he had captured
a Siegfried line pillbox after kill

ing 18.
In almost the same breath Staff
Sgt. Roy C. Russell, with an em
bryo arsenal strapped to his waist,
announced his next objective
would be another pillbox a short
distance away.
"If I could get that I’d com
mand the whole valley", said this
genial southerner, whose squirrel

On Sunday Night
Northampton, Mass., chuckling
over the way Russell unnerved the
Germans by yelling at the top of
his voice.
IMt Sgt Clsreneo nmbdtgerj
lain Vlrginin avenue, 'IVnaeasee,

'•Til bet they thought a*wild
man was kfter them”.
Although the whole regiment
praised his prov|ee8 In taking Um
pillbox, Russell said that It hadnV
been a bit of trouble.
The dramatie sc^ occurred 40
miles south of Aacfmn. ^
Manning told how the sergeant
started the job last Saturday by
machine gunning three Germans
who were running toward the pill
box. The entrance to the fortllica-
tlon had been covered with dirt by
a balldozer at least a week before,
trapping the garrison.
Russell saw shovefnls ot dirt
being thrown np by a German who
was trying to uncover the en
trance. ’The sergeant put him out
of business with three grenades.
On Sunday afternoon, after
American mortar fire knocked out
an enemy machine gun and mortar
batteries protecting the pillbox.
Russell worked his way up to It
through sniper fire and coaxed out
its nine occupants with a couple
of grenades and plenty of yells.
Staff Sergeant Russell Is a son
of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Russell, of
