The Indoor attraction will be
the August 16 "Miss North Car
olina" beanty contest from which
some lucky Tar Heel girl will be
selected to represent the state at
the annual "Miss America" con
teat September 1-6 at Atlantic

pageant, said 25 of the state's
62 Jaycee groups have already
entered girls in the competition
from Albemarle, Asheville, Bre
vard, Charlotte, Durham, Elkin,
Fayetteville, Gastonia, Golde
boro, Greenville, King's Moun
tain, Kinston, Moore8ville, More
head City, New Bern, North Wil
kesboro, Reidsville, Roberson
ville, Rocky Mount, Statesville,
Tarboro, Washington, William
ston, Wilmington and Wilson.
The contest will start at 3:30
p. m. Saturday, August 16, with a
talent show in Lumina Pavilion.
At 9 o'clock that night the girls
will appear again for final judg
ing of form and face, first in
evening dress and then in bath
ing suits. The winner, to be
crowned by State Jaycee Presi
dent Edward Ellis of Charlotte,
will receive a trophy and all
erpenees-paid trip to the Atlan
tic City event. The two runner
ups will also receive trophies.
The following afternoon,
day, August 17, the big outdoor
attraction, a water carnival in
cluding iniboard, outboard and
aqua-ski races, will be staged in
Banks Channel.
About 46 members of the pre
photographers association and an
undetermined number of free
lance cameramen, amateur and
professional, will make a two
day fieldday of the attractions.
The winner of the ''Miss North
Carolina" contest will be sole
judge in awarding $200 in cash
prises to the photograph ere who
snap the best pictures of her
during and after the coronation.

I ship stock car race is scheduled to
' feature the formal opening set
for Sunday, August 10.
The track will be one of the
fastest in this area, and a large
i field of veteran drivers will be on
hand to compete in the opening
races.

Red Caps Drop Two
To Jonesville Nine
North Wilkesooro Red Caps
were defeated by Jonesville twice
but Elkin also lost and the Red
Caps are only one-half game out
of first place in the Yadkin Val
ley 'baseball league.
On Thursday night the locals
lost to Jonesville 9 to 2 in El
kin's park. On Saturday the
Jonesville team outslugged the
Red Caps and won 15 to 6 at
Jonesville.
The Red Cape will play Cling
man here Saturday.

R. P. Riley Ends 10
Years Selling Here
r. P. Riley, owner and man
aeer of the Wilkesboro Live
Stock Market, has just ceiebrated
his 10 th year of Live Sto
handling at his market at North
Wilkesboro, and records show he
has only lost four days in the
ten years of continuous selling.
He lost three of these days
ing. the flood of 1940 when ex
tensive damage was done to h
stock yards in the lowlands^be
tween the two towns of Wilkes
boro and North Wilkesboro. The
other day was lost in 1945_ when
still water backed up into
yards from high waters of the
Yadkin river, on a sale day.
Mr. Riley has recently built a
new stock barn and sales ywtt
just east of Wilkesboro, near the
state prison camp and will not be
bothered with high water. At
the new place he says he has
plenty of room, plenty of
spaced on a good highway with
two lanes for livestock and load
ing chutes covered.
Mr Riley and his auctioneer,
Harvey Ireland, who has been
with him the full 10 years have
thousands of dollars worth of
cattle, hogs, sheep, etc., fort
farmers of Yadkin, Wilkes Ashe
Alleghany and other counties of
Northwest North Carolina.
