Children's Home Tops In Conference Barium Springs, N<yv. ,17.— There is Just no w^y to predict bow things are going to turn out. You can hardly blame the preps when the big boys set such a whale of an example. What we are referring to Is State beating Wake Forest 20-0, Wake Forest beating Carolina a couple of touchdowns and Carolina beating State a half-dozen touchdowns—all of which leads up to the comment on last *6ek's doings In the South Piedmont Conference. For a change every game was played, rain or no rain. The Children's Home, coasting through for their final game and a championship, barely squeaked past Thomasvllle, and Thomasville is away down in the second division. The socrre was 7-6, and Clary, no doubt, has a few extra gray hairs this morning. If the Children's Hornet had lost that game they would still have been champions because Lexington, who would otherwise have Jumped into first place, played Concord to a tie. Concord, the thricebeaten team, aJV but took that game away from Lexington, the final score being 6-6. There must be something about this Bowl situation that brings these things about. The Children's Home had accepted an Invitation to the Tobacco" Bowl, and no doubt the players could not get their minds on an unimportant game like that with Thomasville. Lexington had already accepted an invitation to the Lions Bowl game at Hickory and It was just routine to bump off Concord, but Concord would not have It that way. Now, Concord hag accepted a bid to play in Shelby for the runner-up In the Western Conference, or possibly the champion of the western Conference, depending on the outcome of their games this week. Asheboro threw a scare Into Albemarle with the final score being Albemarle ?6-Asheboro 13, and remember Albemarle was last year's champion and so far this year Asheboro has not won a game. Spencer came and jumped all over Statesville to the tune of 32-0, and Kannapolis went to Monroe and was defeated by that Monroe team which Is a whole lot . better than their standings would indicate. IJorth Wilkesboro played out of the conference in the battle of Wilkes, and was taken by Its neighbor, Wilkesboro, 13-6. Barium journeyed to Salisbury and in the first thirteen minutes of the game gave up four touchdowns and during the rest of the game gave up one. The final score was Salisbury 31-Barium 0. The games for this week are as follows: Lexington goes to Albemarle, and should defeat them; North Wilkesboro goes to Asheboro and should defeat Asheboro; Concord goes to Thomasvilje and should defeat Thomasville, but you never can tell. Statesville goes to Barium for the final* chapter of the battle of Iredell, and that will be the game of the week, regardless of the fact that both teams took a rather severe drubbing last week. Both teams will be at their peak, and will play their best game. It will be an afternoon game at 3:00 at Barium. * Pour games will be played in the Western Conference - this week—Marlon goes to Cherryville In a fight for fourth place; Forest City goes to Kutherfordton—(both are In the second didlslon; Llncolnton goes to N. C. S. D. and should win handily. The big game Is when Morganton goes to Shelby. Neither team hae been defeated. Of course, the victor in this game will 'be the undisputed champion o f the Western Conference. If It Is a tie Shelby will be the winner be-, cause they have one more vie-! tory than Morganton and a tie game would give them a little j bit of an edge in the percentage. This should be the most Interest-1 ing game in this end of the state. J Both teams have accepted Bowl i bids, but it Is hardly likely that either will forget this particular game in thinking of the BoWl game because this is all-Important. There Is a trophy fight noW at the Jewelers .waiting for tlie name "Morganton" or "Shelby" to be engraved. It Is for the championship of the 194T football season of the Western Conference.
