THE JOURNA 1 ~ -1 ■ = AMONG THE COLORED FOLKS Chwrch — Soeleey — Personals A program of songs was rendered last Sunday night at Damascus Baptist church by, "The Four Sons of the South" quartet frequently heard over WII*X. The quartet is composed of (our brothers, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Milas Graham of North Wilkesboro. Sylvester Palmer spent the week-end here with his parents, Rev. and Mrs. Dennis Palmer. He returned to his ship, the U. S. S. Randall, stationed at Yorktown, Va. Members of the Community Club went to Yadkinville Thanksgiving day. In a joint meeting with the missionary circle of Yadkinville. The meeting was held at the church and was well attended. Building of a new church is well underway under the leadership of the ^pastor, Rev. Howell. Rev. Dennis Palmer brought the message in the afternoon using for a theme "Thanksgiving Remembrances". Rev. Palmer took his text from James 1st chapter, 17th verse, and Psalms 139, and 17th verse. The Missionary Circle of Damascus Baptist church held the usual rummage sale and plate dinner,at the home of Mrs. Ollie Suddlth Thanksgiving day. Rev. R. R. White has returned from the annual conference held in Winston-Salem. His many fri£feds and -jjiembers are glad to know that he has been assigned his same church (back for the next year, the Rickard Chapel A. M. E. Zion church. The Parent-Teacher Association of Lincoln Heights school held its regular meeting of the month Thursday night, Not. 13th with the president, Mrs. Elisabeth Grinton, in charge. Mr. D. Smith, Scoutmaster of Winston-Salem, was speaker. Mr. Smith gave a very interesting talk. Also gave a number of demonstrations of some of the Scout activities and games in which he is engaged. All of which were very interesting and entertaining. Plans for the completing of the lunch room were discussed. Many helpful suggestions were given by the parents and teachers. . ✓ Service was held Sunday afternoon at Rickards Ohapel A. "M E. Zion church. Rev. R. R. White, pastor. Rev. Mr. Baxter, of Alabama, brought the message of the hour, taking his text from the 1st chapter and 16th verse of Revelations. Rev. Baxter delivered a most wonderful soul stirring message, full of inspiration. His theme was "Watch the 'Seven Stars". Rev. Baxter then pointed out how one must first have faith in Jesus Christ, second, see your self, third, be broad, Dourth, can you pray th« right prayer, fifth, do your duty, then qualify, sixth, have the blood of Jesue on youj* heart, seventh, ^have compassion on the j lost. Thus the seven stars were' beautifully illustrated. Rev. Baxter wag pastor of Beulah Presj ibyterian church of Fairplains a 1 few years ago. Mies Jean McMillen remains 1 very ill at her home. Mrs.' Johnsie Lee McGee, and children, of Youngstown, Ohio, is visiting here with her mother, Mrs. bona Haynes The Fifth Sunday singing convention will be held at Damascus Baptist church the fifth Sunday in this month, Nov. 30th. The public is obrdially invited. Sylvia Jean Bailey, small daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Frank Bailey, celebrated her third birthday Sunday afternoon. S. Harriston and ■on, Darius. ' an us last business meeting for the year 1947, the First Baptist church approved of a budget calling for $4,000 with which to operate in 1948. Of this amount, $1,300 is expected to ibe used tor general current expenses such as: emergency repairs, fuel and lights, mimeograph supplies, pastor's salary, sexton's and pianists' wy. Approximately $1,900 1b to be used for departmental current expenses including:, literature for all study groups; uniforms and musical supplies for two choirs; ushers equipment; support to home, state, and foreign missions; ministerial education, delegate expenses; and picnics and other group socials. The remaining $800 is to be held by the building fund treasury. This -new $4,000 budget is an increase of about $1,000 over last year's budget of $3,000 which covered the church's total operational costs. The church also re-elected officers for the new year. Most officers retained their old positions. However, James Turner was elected as Superintendent of the Sunday school, and Mcs. Mary Waugh president of the Missionary department. All new officers will be installed the first of the year, 1948.
