SOCIEW District Seminar Largely Attended "By ' His Light Shall the Na tions Walk" was the theme for the Statesvllle District Seminar held Thursday, September 16, at the Woman's clubhouse in North ,'Wilkeeboro with the members of the W.S.C.S. of the First Meth odist church acting as hostess for the day. Mrs. J. C. Madison, of Hickory was in charge of the opening devotions which includ ed a prayer by Miss Lelia Tuttle, Lenoir, a returned missionary from Ohina. The four study 'books for the year were presented by Mrs. C. A. York, High Point; Mrs. J. P. Hornbuckle, Newton; Miss Lil lian Walker, Charlotte; and Mro. J. D.. Ames, Tryon. Mrs. j. B. Steele, Hickory, who presided for the meeting, in her introduc tory talk gave an explanation of the various types of classes that might be held. America's Geographical Fron tiers, which is a study of the book "On Our Own Doorstep" was given by Mrs. York. This is a graphic introduction to the problems of the hour in Alaska, Hawaii, the Canal Zone, and the Virgin Islands. In closing Mrs. York stated that what we need is a bridge of love that these step children may come over and come into our homes and hearts and not be left on our own door step. Mrs. Hornbuckle, who present ed Spiritual Life Growth, also the book, "Newness of Life" for Dale Stentz, of Shelby, who was un able to be present due to illness, emphasized the nee<j for prayer groups establishments of Chris tian homes with family altars, grace at table, and the quiet hour. A telegram was sent to Mrs. Stentz, who was taken ill while attending a seminar meet ing at Asheville, and put in a hospital there. Miss Walker, who spoke on "China in the Asia of Today" urged more local societies to ac cept missionary projects, both, in the home and foreign fields. Due to high costs of living salaries of missionaries must be increased. Mrs. Stents in presenting "The Bible and Human Eights" outlin ed four phases of the text, the Bible in human rightB, the church in huqian rights, the United States in human rights, and the world in human rights. Some of the essentials in pro gram building as given by Mrs. Madison were variety, using more members, attractive rooms, wor ship centers, inspiring leaders, and the presentation of com munity needs. In the noon worship hour led by Mrs. Horabuckle, she used as her theme, the stewardship of small blessirigs, using as a scrip ture text, "How many loaves have yout" / Approximately 12'5 attended the meeting which included a large number of the district of ficers. At 12:30 a picnic lunch was served on the clubhouse grounds with the invocation be ing offered .by Dr. J. C. Stokes, of Maiden, a former pastor of the Wilkesboro church. I la Holman Bible Class In Monthly Meeting The September meeting of the Ila Holman Bible class of the Wilkesboro Baptist church was held Thursday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Lottie McEwen with Mrs. A. ,E. Rhodes as associ ate hostess. Hymns, "Trust and Obey" and '^God Be With You' and sentence prayers opened the meeting which was attended by nine members and two visitors. Mrs. Myrtle Freeland gave the devotions using as a basis for her talk the Ninety-first Psalm, clos ing with prayer. Mrs. Nan Hoyle read a poem "Pathway." Mrs. R. L. Wellborn was in charge of the business session during which time it was announced the next meeting would be held at the home of Mrs. Charlie Steelman at Oakwoods. The hostesses serv ed refreshments during the social hour. Mrs. B. S. Call Is W. S. C. S. Hostess "The World Council of Church es" was the theme for the pro gram given at the monthly meet ing of the Woman's Society of Christian Service held Tuesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. B. S. Call. Mrs. J. B. Henderson was devotional and program leader and had the assistance of Mes dames N. B. Smithey, H. M. Well man, C. H. Hulcher, and J. I* Garwood. Mrs. J. W. White, the president, presided for the busi ness session. Eleven members were present and were served re freshments during the social hour. The next meeting is to be scheduled to be with Mrs. Hulch er.
