Under th^ leadership of Miss Margaret Barnes. American missionary, the North China Christian Rural Service Union Is attempting to tackle' some of the root canses of poverty and distress In this vast populated area. Some of the very practical projects which Miss Barnes and her Chinese men and women associates are working on are: rural church development, crop Improvement, well digging for Irrigation, promoting cooperatives, loan libraries, vocational training, family life education. The activities under these headings run from erecting poultry houses, and planting grape vines to classes in adult literacy and the tbeqterment of parents-child relationships. It Is estimated that there are some 700,000 men, women and children refugees from Palestine in Syria and Lebanon . . . Recently the women of the Presbyterv lan 'U.S.A. Mission in Syria-Lebanon distributed among the refugees clothing that has been given through Church World Service, and turned over the use of property as temporary housing. Nine teachers, all refugees, -were employed in an educational project among Palestinian children In Sidon; and classes for boys,and girls—sewing Instruction, literacy classes, etc.—were established. The victim was Dave Huycke of Los Angeles, third pilot aboard a Sourdough Air Transport Company C-47.
