Blue Ridge Road Liik To Open Asheville, Oct. 22.?Comple tion ot the 270-mile Blue Ridge Parkway link between this gate way to the Great Smoky Moun tain National Park and Roanoke, Va., gateway to the Shenandoah National Park, is - expected by July, 1950. Parkway Supt. Sam Weems to day told a conference of North Carolina and Virginia officials about plans for a formal opening ceremony at-the state line. Weems met the North Caro lina-Virginia delegation at the Bluffs, midway between Ashe rille and Roanoke, where a 24 room lodge has just been com pleted. The Parkway superinten dent said this Is the only over night facility to be built on this section of the Parkway, as pri vate accommodations in resort areas bordering the Parkway are readily accessible to visitors. The lunchroom and gasoline station at Cumberland Knob will be continued and similar day fa cilities will be installed at Crab tree Meadows, 40 miles east of Asheville, Weems stated. These are all the service facilities planned for the Parkway between the state line and Asheville, he said, explaining that Parkway policy was to keep such installa tions at the minimum required by public convenience, and to provide access roads to private lodging and eating places and service stations adjacent to the Parkway. The Bluffs Lodge, patronized since it opened Labor Day will close November 1, but plans now are for it to reopen for the 1950 season on May 1. The lodge, and all other Parkway concessions, are operated by National Park Concessions, Inc., under exclusive contract. Rates and services are strictly supervised by the Park way organization. No commercial signs are per mitted on the Parkway, but chambers of commerce of cities and towns along its route are now preparing an informational folder which will advise tourists of facilities available at each ac cess road intersection. These will be ready for distri b u t i o n through information rooms on the Parkway at the beginning of next season. Boy And Girl Die Of Coal Fumes MT. CLEMENS, Mich?Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Miller found their two-and-a-half-year-old son, Den nis, and an 11-year-old baby sit ter dead upon returning home early today. Fumes from a coal stove filled the small cottage. Three other children of the Millers were over come from the fumes. Deputy Sheriff Kenneth Sch wark quoted the 30-year-old couple as saying they came home at 4 a. m. after spending most of the night at a tavern. The baby sitter, Judith Inscho a neighbor girl, was found dead on the kitchen floor near the stove. Apparently she had fallen from a chair after stoking the stove to keep warm. Deputy Schwark said the fumes were caused by too much coal be ing put in the stove. Little Dennis, a "blue baby" who had an operation last sum mer to correct his abnormal heart condition, was found on a bed room floor. Schwark said it ap peared the child had been awaken ed by the fumes and crawled out of bed before being overcome. o HOME HELPS Red Cross chapters last year handled a monthly average of 66,000 cases concerning service men and their families.
