V J 1(8551 PI . For the first time In the history of The North Wilkesboro Junior Chamber organization, the 2nd North Carolina district was guest of the local Jaycee Club. The second district is composed, of Jaycee clabs in the towns of' Elkin, Mocksville, Mooresville, Statesville, galisbury, Hickory and North Wilkesboro. Dr. Vernon Taylor, of Bttkin, is 2nd District ▼ice-president and presided at this meeting. Dr. Taylor outlined the National Jayfeee' goals tor th»i coming year. Nationally, the Junior Chamber of Commerce is the , most outstanding Civic organization functioning today, according to Dr. Taylor's report to the district. Among the guests present were J. R. Marks of Mooresville, who is one of the three young men now campaigning for the offices of National State Director for the coming fiscal year. Also, present was Jim Summers, of Statesville who is running, unopposed, for the office of 2nd district vlce-prraident. North Wilkesboro club received special commendation - for having the most talked-of Ad In the State Jaycee Directory, a publication Issued annually to the Ment* bers of Junior Chambers throughout the staie.^ The event was a supper meeting' held at the North Wilkes^ boro Woman's- Club and the meal waa- prepared by the Ladies Aid Society of the Baptist" Home chnrch. " (•Commencement At Boone 12th Boone — On Friday morning, May 12, at Appalachian State Teachers college, President B. B. Doughtery was host at the traditional annual President's Breakfast. His guests included the graduating seniors with one guest each, the fathers and mothers of all seniors, the faculty of the college, the elementary school, and the high school with their husbands and wires, and several hundred prominent citizens from all over North Carolina. The President's Breakfast is one of the most enjoyable and most-looked-forward-to events held on the campus during the year. The meal is served by the faculty members of the • college and the two demonstration schools, to the seniors and other guests, j It was held in the college cafeteria, with a varied and satisfying menu from which to choose. Over a period of years, the Presdient's Breakfast has been the beginning affair of commencement day, held at eight-thirty in the morning, with the graduating exercises held at ten-thirty. Last year there were seven hundred in attendance as Dr. Doughterty's guests at the Breakfast. —— o According to legend, coffee roasting started with Arab efforts to keep a monoply on the crop by refusing to sell the raw beans, heating them until they would not germinate. F. Whittington. The meeting opened with the club collect and club woman's son. Mrs. Cecil Church, president of the club, presided for a short business session. Little Miss Gloria Whittington drew a number to determine the winner of the quilt that had recently been made by the club members. No. 207 purchased by Mr. Sanford Crane of the Maple Springs community was winner. Mrs. Greene, gave a most interesting demonstration on "House Remodeling". She also gave valuable information on "Floor Finishing'' and literature on "Floor Maintenance", "Insect and Termite Control", "Diseases of Veg.tablefe'f and ''Vegetable Seed Treatment." ' Refreshments were served by Mrs. V. D. Foster and Mrs. Cyrus Whittington. — o Mr. and Mrs. Ivan D. Anderson have returned from Gettysburg, Pa., where they visited Lt. and Mrs. Cyril B. Spicer. Mrs. Spicer is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anderson. annouced by H. A. ter division manager. A graduate Of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, the 33-year-old Derr will work under Richmond, Virginia, branch manager, J. W. Bogle in hla new assignment. Derr is member of the North Wllkesboro Kiwanls club and of the Wilkes Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was organising president of the latter organization. : « An Army major during World War II, Derr was regimental adjutant of the Corps of cadets while at Virginia Polytechnic. He also was on the rarslty swimming team and coach of the freshman squad. Derr and his wife have two children, John M. Ill, 6 and Diane, 5. He will headquarter in North Wllkesboro. and the Derrs reside at 506 8th Street.
