Methodist, Baptist Vacation Bible School Closed Friday The combined Vacation Bible School Of the First Mftthodist and First Baptist churches, which was in session for two weeks at the First Methodist church, came to a successful close on Friday. Miss Rebecca Raper, director of reli gious education of the First Me thodist church, served a* princi pal for the school, which had an enrollment Of 244 and an aver age attendance of over 200. Mrs W. S. Fletcher directed the art work. Faculty members in the school from the Baptist church were Mes dames U. W. Foster, J. O. Chip man, James Harvel, Jay Brook shire, Tal Pearson, Tal Barnes, C. B. Eller, W. K. Sturdivant, Misses Minnie Haire, Doris Ann God bey, Sylvia Byrd, Christine Godbey;< Julia Felts, Sara Lou Chipman, Betty Lou Lyall Cath erine Walker, Peggy Nichols, Bar bara Johnston, Nancy Sturdivant, Sgt. and Mrs. Arthur Elserman, and Dr. and Mrs. John T. Way land. Those helping from the Metho dist church were Mesdames T. E. Cook, E. L. Derrick, Harold Stur divant, P. W. Ejshelman, Jack Brame, Frederick Gaddy, Walter Pugh, Misses Deannie Gaddy, Betty Lou Kenerly, Carolyn Deans, Patsy Hoover, Margaret Anderson, Norma Gabriel, Donna Smith, Agnes Kenerly, Margie Kenerly, Becky Reins, Mary Mil ler Starr and Nell Gwyn Brame. Mrs. Harvel Howell was chairman of the refreshment committee. » Sub-District MYF Met Monday The sub-district meeting of the Methodist Youth Fellowship met Monday evening at the North Wil kesboro First Methodist church, being well attended. Members from the Friendship church pre sented the program, and members of the Wilkesboro church direct ed the recreation period. Jim Moore, president, was in charge of the business session, and it was announced that he would attend the Leadership School held at Lake Junaluska in July. The host church served refreshments at the close of the evening. Mrs. George Verdone Hostess At Tea The lawn of the J. B. McCoy home on E Street "made a "beau tiful outdoor setting for the in formal tea given Saturday after noon by Mrs. George F. Verdone honoring Dr. Helen Hatton Mc Coy, of Philadelphia, Pa., who with her husband, Dr. J. B. Mc Coy, Jr., were here on a visit with relatives. Other honor guests at the tea were Mrs. Lott May berry and Mrs. Charles Sink, Jr., brides of the winter and spring. Receiving with the hostess and with the three honorees were the three mothers, Mrs. J. B. Mc Coy, mother of Mrs. Verdone; Mrs. A. F. Kilby, mother of Mrs. Mayberry, and Mrs. C. C. Chairs were placed on the lawn, where the guests were seat ed and lingered for a visit with one another. . . 7-rO Calvin Church Is Taken By Death Funeral service was held Fri day afternoon at Pleasant Home Baptist church near Millers Greek for Calvin Columbus Church, 83, for many years a prominent cit izen of that community. Mr. Church died Thursday morning. Born July 7, 1866, Mr. Church was a son of the late Jesse and Adalade Miller Church, of Wilkes county. Surviving are one son, Albert Church, of-route one, North Wilkesboro, one brother, A, U. Church, of Greensboro, and one sister, Mrs. Parasade Cooper, of Millers Creek. Rev. A. W. Filer conducted the last rites and burial was in the church cemetery.
