The Influence of taxes on the
American family -will be upper
most In the minds Of members of
Congress tor the next few weeks.
They are seeking the answer to
this |64-qnestlon:
How can they satisfy ♦increas
ing pnblio demands for tax re
duction and at the akme time find
other taxes to offset such a re
duction? Their problem is made
doubly hard by the fact that Uncle
Sam wants to spend 5 1-2 billion
above his income next year.
The Council of State Chambers
of Commerce today pointed up the
problem In a special study by its
Washington research staff. It
found that the *40 1-* billion in
all taxes collected by the F^ler
ftl Government last year came from
these sources: 44 1-2 percent from
personal Income taxes, 28 1-2 per
cent from corporation Income
taxes, 6 per cent from social se
curity taxes and the balance of
2l per cent from a great variety
of excise and miscellaneous taxes.
A tax study Issued-this month
by the Brooking Institution, an
impartial research organization,
revealed that three fifths of all
manufacturing corporations take
the corporate Income tax into ac
count in determining the prices of
their products. This means that
the consumer pays a large part of
corporate taxes too.
Ernest Breech, executive vice
president of the Ford Motor Co., in
reply to a question whether the
price of cars would go down if his
company's taxes were cut, said,
. "Certainly It would cut prices.
In the long run, eve'ry corporation
must price its products so as to
make a reasonable return after
taxes in order to survive and
grow. In the final analysis, income

Crimson Clover Seed
Not Avoilale For
Use In Corn Crops
It was announced today bj
Maude S. Miller, Secretary of th<
Wilkes County PMA Committee
that an attempt had been made
by the County Committee t(
secure crimson clover seed for use
in sowing in corn when it is layec
by. Due to a shortage of seed
there is not enough available tc
be offered on purchase orders at
this time of year.
Mrs. Miller announces, how
ever, that prior approval can be
given, if any farmer desires tc
purchase seed for use in corn
when it is layed by, from the
short supply that is in the hands
of the dealers at the present time.
Farmers should come by* the
county PMA office and get prioi
approval, then buy the seed and
turn their sales tickets in to the
county office. Reimbursement will
be made for the Government's
part in a check this Fall. Aust
rian winter peas will be available
by the last of this week or the
first of next. This is an agreeable
substitute for crimson cloVer, and
will come at a cost much lower.
