Time Table For
Child Talk Is
Given Parents
A speech "time, table" which
will help parents determine if their
baby is developing normally was
announced today by the North'
Carolina League for Crippled
Children.
Baby's first single words are us
ually said at 12 months of age,
although various sounda are util
ized in earlier months. Average
speech development is according
to the following:
12 months, two or three words;
18 months, 10 to 20 woras; Z4
months, 50 to 250 words; 30
months, 400 to 500 words; 36
months, 800 to 900 words.
The table, according to the N.
C. League, was drawn up by Dr.
Stanley Ainsworth, Associate Pro
fessor of speech, Florida State Uni
versity, and is contained in the
new book "Speech Problems of
Children," prepared by the Ameri
can Speech and Hearing Associa
tion for the National Society for
Crippled Children and Adults,
with which the League is affili
ated. The book has just been pcb
lished as a practical guide to the
care and correction of speceh de
fects for parents, teachers and
others working with children. It
may be obtained by purchase or
through the loan library Of the
N. C. League for Crippled Child
ren, Chapel Hill, N. C.
"So many parents wonder if
their children are progressing ac
cording ot the normal rate of
speech development that the table
is published to give them an aver
age standard. They should re
member, however, according to the
authors, that girls are usually
ahead of boys at each of these age
levels and that development
comes in spurts between periods
when it seems that there is little
learning being accomplished. Fur
thermore, there are wide differ
ences in individual growth,"
spokesman for the League said.
He pointed out that in the normal
child, speech should be expected
by the age of three years and
should not be considered delay
ed until that age.
The nationally known speech
correction workers and speech
pathologists who collaborated In
writing the book tell how to recog
nize speech disorders in children,
how parents and teachers can help
children overcome their speech
handicaps, and how those handi
cap# can be prevented from hav
ing a crippling effect on the child's
personality development.
There are nine contributors to
the book, each of whom-devotes a
chapter to a special phase of
speech development or correction,
such as cerebal palsy, cleft palate
and lip. voice disorders, hesitant
speech, and children who speak
foreign languages.
