25-Year-Olds Slated
To Be Inducted First
___
Washington, July 10 — A call
iter 20,000 army draftees "at the
y 11
earliest possible date" went out
from the Defense Department today.
Maj. Gen. Lewis B. Hershey, director
of selective service, told
newsmen that 25-year-olds will be
called first.
Hershey said it will take about
60 days to start delivering men
under the draft. He 8aid his
agency could—if necessary—furnish
up to 300,000 men within
90 days. *
On Capitol Hill, lawmakers
generally said they were not surprised
at the army's speedy use
Of the draft despite an apparen£ly
brighter trend in the battle
of Red-invaded South Korea.
"Now that we are in this thing,
we have to have men to make
the operation successful," commented
Senator Taft (Republican,
Ohio).
"I had hoped they could be obtained
on a volunteer basis, but if
they can't, the draft will have to
be used."
The Defense Department said in
a statement that the draft call—
the first since January, 1949—
was required to meet the manpower
ceiling approved by President
Truman last week. The exact
figures of the total increase
have been kept secret. Military
officials are relying heavily on
volunteers. to reach its goal.
Gen. J. Lawton Collins, army
chief of staff, and Gen. Hoyt S.
Vandenberg, air chief of staff,
left tonight for Tokyo to confer
with Gen. Douglas MacArthuf
on the Korean situation,
Draft Chief Hershey told a
news conference shortly before the
Defense Department's announcement
was issued that if the draft
call goes as high as 300,000 Men,
Only men aged 19 to 25, inclusive,
may be drafted under the
present Selective Service Act, as
authorized by Congress. The law
says every American male must
register on his 18th birthday, although
he cannot he drafted until
he becomes 19.

Our Country And
Social Security
The Social Security office has
always been interested in working
closely with employers, civic
clubs, both men's and women's
and other governmental and welfare
agencies on a Social Security
information program.
Much still remains to be done
toward this end. Some workers
and families Of deceased workers
and families of deceased World
War II veterans (even though the
veteran never worked under Social
Security) continue to lose
benefits because they don't know
their rights under the Old-Age and
Survivors Insurance, one of the
programs contained in the Social
Security Act. So consequently, a
continuous informational program
on this provision, of the. Act to
needed to inform people of their
rights.
You have many civic clubs and
other community resources In your
town and county. Social Security
is Just another of your community
resources. How can you use It?
