r^HINESE RED ARMY THREATENS TIBET INDIA .rA^\{ THOUSANDS OF CHINESE Red troops are reported crossing the border of Tibet (1) from fiinkiang Province (2) in Central Asia, according to nonCommunist military observers. If successful, such an invasion would menace the Buddhist government of the 11-year-old Dalai Lama (right) in the capital at Lhasa, famed "Roof of the World." (Central Preu) Powerful H-Bomb [ >Hope Is Hinted Washington, July 13 — The | Congressional Atomic Energy Committee hinted today this country hopes to produce a hydrogen bomb so powerful it could destroy a city as big ag Chicago and its suburbs. The awesome possibilities of the weapon were outlined in a carefully-worded report prepared by the committee staff. Technically, ^t covered the problems raised by The dreaded H-bomb in efforts towards international control of atomic energy. Carries Review | Actually, the pamphlet carried the most complete review of Hbomb problems and history yet 1 issued by a government agency.' It discussed "triggering" of the boSib, ingredients involved, and supplies of raw materials. In a formal statement accompanying the report, Senator Brien McMahon (Democrat, Connecticut), chairman of the committee pointed out that the Korean campaign does not prevent the United States and Russia from moving "closer toward the hydrogen bomb." "Control of these dreadful weapons is still the heart question of the peace, the overriding question which — unless solved— leaves nothing fundamentally solved," he said. No Authority The report carried few direct statements. It consisted largely of a list of questions—with no answers. What few direct statements were made cited no authority but, as one committee member said: "It is logical to assume there would not be a report on a project unless there was a basis for assuming the project to be feasible." The report said it "might be possible" to construct an H-bomb whose blast damage in a circle 20 miles in diameter would be comparable to the total destruction achieved in a circle two miles in diameter at Hiroshima. "It has been stated that it might be a thousand times greater than that of a (plutonium) fission bomb," it added. The pamphlet then quoted an article by Atomic Scientist Hans Bethe in which he states that flash burn effect of the hydrogen bomb would be greater than its blast effect. He said the flash effect could cause "fatal burns" within a circle 40 miles in diameter. "The inhabitants of Chicago and its suburbs could thus be wiped out," Bethe said. — o The number of Grade A milk producers in North Carolina increased from 2,126 in April, 1948, to 3,703 in April 1950—an in[ crease of 7 4 per cent. _ REDDIES RIVER ESSO SERVICE Now Under New Management Esso Gas, Tires and Batteries.
