>U1 of S,400,000 chicks were ad by commercial hatch i In the State during May. This almost 1 per cent above the pa ttfc May, 1949, and 9 per int alfme the 1944-48 average. Immediate Tax 11 Boost Proposed Washington, July 21 — An Im mediate multibllllon-dollar "across the board"' boost in federal taxes, to crack down on "profi teers" and to put the nation on a pay-as-you-go basis in the Kor ean crisis, was proposed today by the Senate-House Economic Committee. If the committee's recommen dation were followed it could mean that Americans—individu als and corporations—would be called upon to bear the biggest tax load in history — greater than the record tax take of $44,800, 000,000 In the last war year, 1945. It might also mean a near con fiscatory levy on business profits that could be classed as "profi teerinsr." Advisory Powers However, the committee's powers are advisory only. Taxes are handled by the House Ways and Means and Senate Finance Committees. Most legislators agree there will have to be a substan tial tax increase, but there is much sentiment for applying it to next year's income not this year's. Senator O'Mahoney (Democrat, Wyoming), chairman of the Eco nomic Committee, told reporters the committee agreed unamimous ly on the need for a quick in crease. The committee suggested no special figures, but speculation around Capitol Hill had it that President Truman may ask for a tax increase between $5,000,000, 000 and $10,000,000,000 a year. Chairman O'Mahoney said the committee agreed that new taxes should be put on individual in come as well as upon corpora tions, On his own he suggested that individual taxes be boosted 10 per cent "at least." Apple Estimate Revised Upward (By CARIi 8. VANDEMAN) The U. S. D. A. July apple crop estimate is 119,180,000 bushels for the entire United States. This is an increase of nine million bu shels over the June "guesstimate" made by apple growers at the annual meeting of the National Apple Institute in early June. The U. S. D. A. estimate for Washington State is 34,200,000 bushels of apples; an increase of 4 million from the June figure. This would be the record high commercial crop for Washington State. Word from there is the crop looks that good, but only if Winsaps are able to attain nor mal sizing. In the Midwest, U. S. D. A. esti mates Missouri and Michigan higher; Illinois and a fairly light apple crop in the central states. New York State is estimated at 18 million bushels or 1.7 million above the June estimate. New England is up a million bushels to 8,600,000. The estimate given for Pennsylvania is 7.9 million but there are some reports of a heavy Stayman drop in that State. Virginia apple growers are look ing forward to one Of the full crops in recent years with 11,400, 000 bushels estimated, a million bushels higher than in June. The U. S. D. A. estimate for North Carolina is 980,000 bushels of ap ples or just about the same as the crop in 1948.
