Xilby visited in Elkin for several days last week with her daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Atkins. Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Bumgarner, of Millers Creek, observed their 45th wedding anniversary, Thursday. Little Miss Katherine Davis of Taylorsville is spending a few days this week with Miss Sarah Elizabeth Meadows at Pores Knob. Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Absher and two children, Libby and Henry, were vacationing last week at Carolina Beach. Mr. and Mrs. J. Wesley Cook, of Greenville, S. C., were guests Thursday and Friday of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Jones. Mr. and Mrs. John Redman, of iLeaksville, spent last week-end here with Mrs. Redman's parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. G. Kilby. Miss Martha Ann Kennedy, of Winston-Salem, spent last week here in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Kennedy. Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Deberry, who have been residing on D Street, have moved into their new home in Wilkesboro. Mr. and Mrs. Thurman Kenerly and three daughters, Misses Agnes, Betty Lou, and Margie Kenerly,; and Mrs. Kenerly's sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. James W. McNeill and son, Jimmy, were vacationing last week at Pawley's Island, S. C. Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Parduo, of Chapel Hill, spent the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Pardue at 'Roaring River. Mrs. Pardue remained for a week's visit. Miss Leatrice Absher and* her cousin, Miss Irene Key, have returned to their homes in North Wilkesboro, after spending a week with relatives in Kannapolls. •^Mrs. William Downing left Frlday*Ser her home at Arlington, Va., after visiting here for about two weeks in the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Hulcher. Mr. and Mrs. Ruffin Bailey, of Raleigh, visited here during the week-end with Mrs. Bailey's parents, Judge and Mrs. J. A Roussean. Mr. and MrSj David Hill Carlton, Jr., of Boston, Mass., announce the birth of a son, David Hill Carlton, III, on Saturday, August 11. Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Eller had as their overnight guests Friday Mr. and Mrs. Pearce CooJ^ and two children, Pearce, Jr., and Carol, of Charleston, S. C. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Scroggs and daughter, Miss Dorothy Scroggs, of Raleigh, were visitors during the Week-end in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Lillard, and with other relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Kennedy, Mrs. Bon Perkins and son, Carter Perkins, attended last Sunday the Horton reunion and picnic dinner held at the old Horton home near Ferguson. Misses Elizabeth Bright, of Rutherford College, and Mary Elizabeth Miller of Hickory, were guests last week of Mr. and Mrs. Bon Perkins. The girls are nieces of Mr. and Mrs. Perkins. Mr. W. S. Fletcher has returned to his home at Purlear after being a patient at Davis Hospital In Statesville, where he underwent an operation. Friends are glad to know he is Improving. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Crow and son, Frank, Jr., and Mr. D. K. ^augh spent last week In Birmingham, Ala., attending the convention of the Southern Wholesale Confectioners Association. . Mr. and Mrs. Joe H. Byers and daughter and son, Joann and Charles were recent visitors at Askeboro with Mr. Byers's brother and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. C. K. Byers. Mrs. J. W. Bean, of Raleigh, spent last week here in the home of her son and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Bean, Jr. She was accompanied home by her husband, who came up for the week-end. Mrs. Thad Roberts and two children, Linda and Thad, Jr., have returned to their home at Asheville following a visit of ten days here in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Lillard. Mrs. Roberts Is a daughter of Mrs. Lillard. Miss Ann Lott and Miss Isabella Gibbs are representing the North Wilkesboro high school at the Blue Ridge Hi-Y, Tri-Hi-Y Leaders Congress being held this week. Mrs. Lott took the girls to Blue Ridge yesterday. Mrs. J. Floyd Woodward and two daughters, Patricia and Gale, are spending awhile with Mrs. Woodward's mother, Mrs. Betty Willis, at St. Paul. They plan to be there until the 21st of this month. Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Eller, and son, Kyle, Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Turner and son, Tommy, and Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Anderson and daughter, Glenna, have returned to their respective homes after enjoying a week's vacation at Carolina Beach. Lieutenant Robert W. McCoy, who is stationed at Fort Meade, Md., arrived Saturday to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. McCoy, for a few days before returning to duty at Fort Meade. He and his mother left today to spend a few days at Montreat. Bare and daughters, Carol and Jane, of this city, and Mr. and Mrs. Guy Hunt and family, of Boone, were visitors at Cherokee yesterday and today, and on Sunday evening saw the pageant "Unto These Hills." Miss Claudine (Nicky) Nichols has returned from a trip to Washington, D. C., where she visited her aunt. Miss Irene Parsons. While in Washington Miss Nichols attended the opening night of the Seequicentennial Drama "Faith of Our Fathers," by Paul Green. Mr. and Mrs. Slater Prevette and son, Henry and Mr. and Mrs. Grover Pendry have returned to their home at Hays after spending, a week in Indiana with Mr. Pendry's relatives. In Huntington, W. Va., they spent several hours with Mr. and Mrs. Sherrill Gregory. Mrs. C. M. Hulcher and- her house guest, Mrs. William Downing, of Arlington, Va., Mr. .and Mrs. Charles B. Hulcher and son, Buddy Hulcher, were visitors at Cherokee Wednesday and Thursday and on Wednesday evening attended a perfromance of the pageant, "Unto These Hills." Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Miller, of Wilkesboro, and their son, Mr. L. H. Miller, of Shelby, went to Asheville Friday" to spend a few days there. On Saturday evening they saw a performance of the pageant "Unto These Hills" at Cherokee. Visitors in the home of Mrs. B. S. Call last Sunday for the day were Mr. and Mrs. George Hillard, of Raleigh, and their niece, Miss Dorothy Forester, of New York City, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Walker and Mrs. O. E. Liipfert, of Winston-Salem. Mesdames F. C. Forester, W. W. Miller, Sr., and Mrs. W. T. Cranor, of Detroit, Michigan, were recent visitors at Sumter, S. C. They were visiting with Mrs. W. A. Holder, Miss Rhetta Forester, and a number of other Forester relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Roby L. Johnson, of Packwood, Iowa, are visiting relatives and friends in Wilkes and Alleghany counties. Mr. Johnson is the son of Mrs. C. F. inhnnnn. of Laurel Serines and the late Mr. Johnson. He has resided in Iowa for the past 35 years. Mr. R. W. Kurfees, who is spending awhile here in the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. E. Jones, and Mr. Jones, attended the Masonic picnic at Mocksville Thursday, which was attended by approximately 7,000 people. The occasion marked the seventieth picnic, and the 100th anniversary of the Mocksville Masonic Lodge. Mr. and Mrs. A. F. KJlby, Miss Gladys i»max, and Miss Ruby Blackburn spent thS week-end at Cherokee and attended a performance of the pageant "Unto These Hills." They were joined there by Mr. and Mrs. Jack Quinn, of Chattannoga, Tenn., who took home with them Mrs. Kilby for J an extended visit. | , Mr. and Mrs. Chal McNeil with their houseguests, Mr. and Mrs. John Ward, of Silver Springs, Md., and Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Ward, of Spartanburg, S. C., spent the day Sunday at Stoneville in the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Roberts. The McNiels, part of the time entertained their visitors at their new cottage, Breeze Hill, on highway 421. Mrs. Parker Holmes, of Forest City, and widow of the late Rer. Parker Holmes, a former pastor of the North Wilkesboro First Methodist church, recently sustained painful injuries in a fall, fracturing her right arm. She was hospitalized at Rutherfordton for a week, but is now at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Grover C. McDaniel, in Forest City. ' Mrs. S'. V. Tomlinson visited for several days last week at Salisbury in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Virginia Gregory. Before her visit to Salisbury Mrs. Tomlinson, Jennie Ann and Merrimon Gregory, of Salisbury, Mr. and Mrs. Carlyle Ingle and two sons, Bill and Tom, of this city, visited for a few days at Washington, D. C., and Baltimore, Md. Mr. Jimmie Canter, son of Mr. Hubert Canter, of this city, was on the dean's list at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville, Va., for his entire second year. He is now on a period of duty at the naval air base at Pensacola, Florida, and will spend one month at home before resuming his studies at the University of Virginia. Miss Beth Jones, who has been attending summer school at New York University, and her mother, Mrs. W. F. Jones, who had spent two weeks in Washington, D. C., as guest of Mrs. W. D. Marshall, returned home today. Mr. Hale Jons went to Washington and accompanied them home, Miss Jones will be a seventh grade teacher in North Wilkesboro school this year. Mr. and Mrs.' H. D. Ball and children, Durant, Linda and Brenda, of this city, and Mr. M. I. Ball, of Jackson Springs, returned last week from a four weeks' tour Jo points of interest in western states. At Idaho Falls, Idaho, they visited relatives. On the trip they visited Rocky Mountain, Grand Teton, Yellowstone, Bryce Canyon, Zion Canyon, and Petrified Forest national parks. They also visited Salt Lake City, Utah, and many other cities and towns of scenic interest. Miss Margaret Hubbard, of St. Lake's Hospital, Richmond, Va., arrived here Saturday to Bpend a three weeks vacation with her mother, Mrs. James C. Hubbard, and other relatives. Miss Ruth Hubbard, of Moravain Palls, Is spending her vacation with friends In Clearwater, t la. She made the trip to Florida with Mr. and Mrs. Shatter Laws, of Washington, D. C. Miss Martha Gozeal Justice is to return to her home here Thursday from Camp Green Cove at Tuxedo, where she has been staying for eight weekB. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John E.
