CLEOPATRA DYING.
BY IIV.UMI.NK.
Glorious victim of my niagicl
Ruined by my potent
riom the world's impel lal nation.
Have I dragged ill -u liown tu He II
Fallen Chieftain! Unthroned Monarch I
Lost through doning love (or no I
l ast, on shade of u gl.t eli rnl.
Wings my soul its ll gh: to thee !
Ceasar shall not hi- triuroih.
Willi proud Egypt's captire IJucen I
Bool lied to sleep by aspic kies,
Hoon my heart on tame -hall lean :
boon my Mo like Lotus blossom,
Sn :i shall glide on Charon's dream:
Clasped once more in thy embraces.
Love shall prove an endless dream I
Irtsl Chamianl Bind my (r-9e?l
Place the crown above my brow ?
Touch these band and take these kisses
Anthony reprove not now;
r:.. i.' ur KP 0 1 earn me poisoned vapors f
They have struck my Chamian de.id !
Foolish minion durst proceed aie, .
Where my sprit's Lord has fled I
None shall ixeet his smile before me,
None within bis arms repose ;
Be his heart's impassioned fires,
(J leuched upon my bossoin - snows I
None shall shite his burning kisses,
Ere I haste me to his tide !
(Maria's tears may prove her widowed
Cleopatra's still his bride !
See ! Ify courrige claims the title
Closer press the aspic fangs,
Memories ol his quickened touches
Sweeten now these deadly pangsl
Honor, manhood, glory's teaching,
All, he bartered lor my smile,
Twined his henrt-stings round my fingers
Vibrant to their touch the while.
Followed fast my silver rudder,
Fled from Ceasar's scornful eye,
Heeded not his bleeding honor,
Qlad upon my breast to lie!
Then I snared him in my meshes,
Bound him with my wily art,
From the head of conquering Jegions,
Snatched lnui captive to my heart.
Wild Ins soul at my caresses I
Weak his soul at my command I
Rome, with lury. saw her mightiest
Bowed beneath a woman's hand I
Noblest of the noble Romans;
Greatest of the Emperors thee ;
Tbou didst fling away kingdom
Egypt gives herself to theo
Sweet as balm. Most soft and gentle
Drains the asp my failing bieiith :
Antony I Lord I My Lover I
Stretch thine arms to me in death.
Guide me through these deepening shadows
Faint my heart and weak my knees:
Glorious victim ! Ruined heio I
Cleopatra dies lor thee!
MURDER WILL OUT.
A gifted legal friend of this town gave
ns the following account of a heartless
murder, and its final revelation, that took
place in this State many years ago A
man by the name of J , of Wayne Co.,
N. C, sold a free negro (whom he had
cheated into the belief that he was but
hiring) to a gentleman whom c will call
Brown, in one of the adjacent districts ol
South Carolina. Sometime afterwards
B own discovered the fiand, and. immedi
ately wrote to J , from whom be had
Curchased him in Wayne county, that if
e paid back the money he had paid him
for the free negro he would not prosecute
htm, and besides keep it a profound se
eret. To this Mr. J replied he wonld
gladly do so, and nrgrd Mr. Brown, to
come for it immediately, arid closed br
assnring him of his gratitnde that he htd
spared his family the humiliation of a pub
lie disclosure. Mr. Brown, therefore, left
his home on horseback for Wayne coun
ty, and, upon reaching the residence of
Mr. J, he was kindly received and
sumptuously entertained. The money
was paid over lo him, and be wis prevail
ed on to spend several days with the fam
ily and enjoy the sporta-of the conntry.
After a very pleasant sojourn of a week
he started for his home, in South Caroli
na, with the best wishes of his bust and
family that he might have a sfe journey,
and return of en to enjoy their hospitali
ties. Several wcrkr after bis departure
leti. rs were received from Mr. Brown's
family, making enquiry for liim. and stA

Search and enquiry however proved fruit"
