Senator Hill’s Opinion of Pres. Davis. In a speech delivered by Hop. B. II. Hill, before the Legislature of Georgia, recently, he alluded to Pre sident Davis as follows : “ I was not prepossessed in his fa vor. He was not originally my first choice for his present high position.— Furthermore, since his election, if a single old political friend of mine, in this State, has received a civil com- ■ mission at his hands, I am to this hour not aware of the fact. These tilings Ure not calculated to win a favorable judgment; but I experience a sense of self-respect when I realize as I do the fact’ that I am capable of lilting myself above all these petty, but too often popular considerations, and can judge the President by the merit of ins ability and patriotic motives, and by the principles of his administration. Thus judging him, I declare to you that if I had now to select a Chief Magistrate for this trying crisis, 1 should feel tt a duty to select Xe^fersi.n Davis. * * But Nr. Davis with all the disadvantages of a new and weak government to which I have al luded, and with the fearful doom of the chief of traitors full before him'in case of failure, has never yet found it necessary to violate the Constitution of his country, nor to trample upon the rights of the humblest citizen.— Within the boundaries of law, by the provisions of Legislative grant, and according to the high and ancient principles of Anglo-American free men, he has used the sword to the shame and discomfiture of a million of enemies in arms. By a vigorous policy he has led a new born nation from weakness to power. By a firm but humane adherence to the great principles of nations into whose family we have been refused admittance, he has degraded the faithless excesses of our adversary to universal notoriety and perpetual infamy. And by the wisdom of an accomplished statesman ship, and the pure rhetoric of an elo quent pen, he has secured admiration and esteem for himself and his coun trymen in the highest Cabinets and the most refined Courts of the civil ized world.' 1 Another Fight and Victory. Port Hudson, Feb. 10.—Informa tion has just been received here that our pickets and a portion of General Sibley’s command encountered the en- etny at Indian Village to-day routing him after a severe fight. Ilie enemy admit a loss of 1000 in killed, wound ed and missing. Positive information from Baton Rouge states that an Irish brigade and a negro regiment had been sent below. The total force of the enemy at that point is 19,000. Deserters are continually arriving here. ^^, Bead the New Advertisements. Tribute of Respect. Departed this life on the 7th inst., after a protracted illness, Mrs. Jane Morrison, in the 70th year of her age. In the death of this aged mother in Israel, the church has lost a consistent member, the family a loving and tender mother, the com munity in which she lived a kind and faith ful friend.
