" Wll , , - Richmond Uuuu Sept., lOih 1838. Maj. Jonei i Dear Sir : I have read with peculiar interest the report of E. B. Hicks on the subject of Shallow Draught Steam Boat M . a I I .a a navigation ma puoiiaaeum ute Walcnman of September 3d. I have looked forward to the meelinr to be held in Salisbury on the 10th October next, as a time when subjects of the great' eat importance not only to our section of country, but to the whole Bute, will be acted upon, & aensible of the great impor tance of uniting all our energies on that oc casion, I have concluded to contribute my mite by tendering such information sa 1 am in possession of to the meeting. But perhaps, it will promote the interests of the objects in view, if in anticipation of lha meeting, I were to lay before your numer ous renters my observations on, that part of the Yadkin Kiver which 1 have sur veyed. At February term of the County Court of Rowan, in 1827, 1 was employed to make a survey of the principal roads and watercourses in the County; and prepare two maps of the County one for Mr. Mc Rae of Fayelteville, who waa then making amapoflhe State, and the other to be kept for the use of the Court. In thejdischarge of this July, I descended the North Yaukiu in July. lo.7, imm a- bout 19 miles above the Surry line to the Montgomery line, at Slokea Ferry. My survey however, was confined to that nai of the River which either lay in or formed a pari of the boundary line of Rowan Couutjv My atari bo high up in Suiry wad in consequence , of my not -being aHle to procure a suiuMe boat nearer the rr and I tbinV it was found that 4 fett fall could not b had titer lor mile. In some places, tha water falls three or four feet "perpendicularly tha principal or then are the Ball Mountain and Mott'a Falls, with aeveral Mill Data and other obstructions, rendering that part of the Uiver more UilQcult Tor navigation than 60 or 70 miles above. The distance from the Montgomery line to th Narrows i not great, and I am informed that there are several dangeroua 8.'ioals, and on or two mill dams that would present serious difficulties to navigating tbat part of th ri ver also.
