"Let there he light." T is proposed to establish in the Town of Washington, North Carolina, a new paper under the above title and inottot 'i'he title indi cates the political character of the paper, and the m4t indicates its purpose. It will advocate strongly and warmly tiie doctrines of the Old He publican party the doctrines of 1798, '99 the doctrines of Thomas Jefferson. It will maintain a strict construction of the Federal Constitution. It will of course resist the re-charter of a .Natioual Bank in every form which Federal ingenuity can propose, fs'uch an institution is believed to be not only at war won uie constitution, but the worst ;io ne cumuieicuu ...ue1WI.ue..c 01 uie ouuui, It has besides, many dangerous p olitical temlen-i cies. The Republican will advocate a divorce Oe- twan Bank and Slate. The union of Bank and State is mutually corrupting, just as the union of Church and Mule has been tound m all past history. And asin our fre government it has been found, that government can get along very well without the aid of church, and the church best maintain its purity with e-ut the interference or aid of gov eruniet.t; so it will be found equally advantageous t separate Government and Bank, and let each rest upon its own merits. A great question is now bel re the people ot this country. It is : "Shall the people govern the banks, or the banks govern the people!" It involves another question: Are the pi.,ple capable f self-government! Are they prepared to succumb to the dominion of a moneyed aristocracy ! The odds are formidable : money is jwwer, and a power ever adverse to popular tree d -in. The danger from such power is in propor tion to its concentration : and it may safely be as serted, that a mre extensive and formidable con cent ration i f the money power never existed in any country than now exists in our own. It is w-'giug ppa war with the people. It is even now sweeping counties and States in its ruthless and eonnuerinvr m;irch. All the purchaseable tal ent of the ceuntry Ls enlisted against the people. Pepular liberty is in danger. The people must rally to the rescue. Thanks to the wisdom and valor ( f cut forefathers, the political pow-ris still in the Iv.mds of the people; a,i Siirev it can onlv be necessary that they should be aroused to a Eense of the danger The Republican will be found on the side of th people and ao-ainst irre sponsible power. Will the people be true to them- iclves . ihj .in ivv., v.. ni nov oe over looked. A portion nt the columns of the Repub lican will be devoted to improvements in Agricul ture, Markets, &e.
