And this is the way they spend the Sabbath: in shooting, drinking, fighting, and everything else that's demoralizing. My mission in that neighborhood was to destroy illicit whiskey dis tilleries. We had a quiet time for the first day or two, as it was not generally known that wo were on the war- ath. The balance of the week it was quite warm for all con cerned. On the 8th my pilot con ducted me within sight of a large distillery in the woods, batween two mount a ns, on a spring branch. This was one among the most dan groas places to enter. Oar pUoU though, a man of good nerre, flag ged, and told as he could not ven tare furtjier, bat woa meet is ai another point. This distillery be longed to Robert Cagl, who nsver operated his still without his baud being around him. We crawled down the side of the mountain, within ten steps of the deo, aroso to oar feet and charged the premises before we were neard or seen. We rush ed inside with pietols presented. and demanded of them to surrender. Each on (eight in number) bent rTor his weapons, but stopped as Vour pistols wert sprang and present ed. Uommand was immediately given to firooii too first man who laid his nana on fcis weapon. We then arrssted the crowd, searched tnem and held them in custody un til the distillery was completely dex stroyed and the owner thereof se cured. We were heard when within thirty or brty steps of the den by the watch ul "moonshiners." There were only four in this place, but they stuck to the text like men. They opened the front door-abd fired a volley into us, wounding one ot my men slightly in the head. We re turned the compliment, at which time they retreated out of the back door, leaving their shoes. We com pleted our job here and proeeeded to our camp. These dish-faced rebels, not being satisfied, followed ns and kept shooting around us the remainder of the night. Friday morning, the 10th, found ns again on the war path. The next place of interest was tho Gurley Broth's en' "Moonshinery." We captured this without trouble, as we were on them before theyf awoke from their peaceful slumbers.
