A shoit time ago the farmers of Edge combe were miehtilv in the dumps. Wiih the piospcct of a short crop, low price the jute trust and many other things to contend w.th, they met with universal sympathy. But, what with a little mon ey in sight an article they had been f o long without the jute trust downed and the price of cotton look ig up, fieir spir its are rising and they begin to ,ilk Fair One of the most intelligent laraoers in the county remarked to a reporter that, the Fair just had to be a success a ?r id1 success. And this is repeated on ever) si Le, Now, let the good housewives take hold of the matter in earnest and such success is assured as Horatio never dreampt of in his philosophy. But it takes work, woik- hard work. Let each Edgecombean constitute himself a committee of one to get a neigh bor Interested in the Fair. The management will give every aid, and instruction ia their power. If Edge combe d een'i watch some oiher county will gather the persimmons. uommisiicnrs' Koe'lng Wednesday evening the town commis sioners met in the Mayor's office, present Mayor Fountain and commissioners N&fh, Farrar, Gant and Bass; John Weddell, Secretary, at his desk. Minutes of last meeting read and ap proved. The committees on Streets, Fire, Lights and Cemeteries made no report. j v . Commiss:ooer NaBh thought the Build ing Commiite should hold a meeting and investigate the mat'er carefully. Chief of Police, Cotten, asked the Board to furnish new uniforms for the force, as the present ones were worn out. Commissioner Bass stated that the Al liance committee had not yet met to lo cate the warehouse. Commissioner Nash moved that the ia- f vettfgatfon pi Ih? removal of policeman j j Pittman be postponed uhtiiI342grf carried. It was resolved to charge fifty centa for peddling any article whateyer on cir cus grounds. Adjourned. .1 ii Ianovatloa. The rt-por er is inf rrae 1 by the Secre tary of the Socie y that the managers have resolved to dispense wi'h marshals at their approaching fir, to begin Nov. o h, and insted, to substitute an efficient corps of special police Tnis is wise. Such a change not onily rids the treasury of an UDuecesfary expense, bu but insures better police regulations and more com plete enforcement of order and decorum on he grounds. It will be a better pro tection to the un a'y rustic, with more money than brains, ban fleeced by sharp ers, who, somehow or other, always man age to infest such p'aces- The marshals are u dually selected for their personal beauty, cleverness and pop ularity. The question of efficiency is never discussed, or thought of. I' is a matter of fair history tha these beautiful boys have eyes single for the girls and that's wht they come for. Again.it is wise on the ground of econo my. In these pip ng times i f impecuni sity it behoves the manag.-meat t cut expenses in everything except premiums. And in lopping off this needless expense the management has shown the wisdom it has most earnestly desplaycd up to this time The marshals have gone, and a tear for the girls expectant of the sashes. Eangllit Peartcn Tne world's poet has exp essed the opinion thit some men are born great, some achieve greatness and some have i thrust upon tbem. The powerful divine whose name heads this article possesses within himself the two first of these propositions, as the thousands, who have been swayed by his eloquent pulpit ora'ory, can attest. And his is the eloquence oi simplicity. The plain directness of his Biblical ex , couched in terms that every readiiy comprehends, goes pointedly a j nrotrodinsrlv to the heatts or ns he irers and there sticks, w rklng ma:vels of ,rood 1 be man is said to be not a' tractive 10 snpearance, of attenuated frame, in feeble health, but wLen he geu well underway in Lis discurse everybody lis'eos. Jordan and Lawrence Johnson and the wife of H. L. Leggett, all wtll knowp and highly respectable citizens of this county, are fjrs t cousins to the celebrated preacher. These relatives have been in commu nication wi h Rev. Mr. Pearson and he has promised to be present at a family gathering at H. L. Leggett's, the first S unlay after he begins his services here. He never holds meetings on Saturdays . The mother of this noted amne was born and raised, the reporter is informed near Ing's now Whitaker's-mill in Nas, county. With her busowa sue re moved to Mississippi and is now living in that state her husband being dead. The 13th October Will doubtless s.e the argest and most intelligent crowd that ever visited Tarboro and it will be some thing new for the Reverend gent'eman to preach to so many relatives. United States Agrinst Turner Pender. S. Turner Pender, former cleik in Tar boro Poetoflice, had a preliminary hearing before United Slates Commissoner, Wiley H. Rollins, at KocKy Mount, Friday, on warrant issued against hi an bf the Government, charging him with a misde meanor, consisting in taking a letter from the U. 8. mail uxlawfolly, and was bound over to tbe U. S. Court at New Berne. The Government proved by S, L, Uart hat the loiter was given to Hryan, posUl clerk on the A. & K. R- at Kocky Mount to put in the Tarboro mail. Br van swore that be put it, a large Government envelope, loose in the Tar boro pouch August 2Wh. W. W. Carraway disclaim :a Deing prose cutor. Hookins. a postal clerk on the main line swore thit the letter was dropped in the letter box in his Cir Aug. 21st while at the Rocky Mount platform; tbat the train j then pulled out and when about 100 yards! from the depot train stopped on account obstruction on the track; that be then nt this letter, with eight or nine others, in his car. through mistaks over to tne Rocky Mount Postoffice; that while the train was ait in 2 for tiack to te cleared defendant came into the car and asked about some business connected with the Tarboro office, after which he left; tbat the letter was ia hit box before the aeien dant came in. The first witness for tbe defence was Lee Pender, also a clerk in the Tarboro Postoffice. He testified that he openea the pouch Aug. 20th; that the mail was small and that no letter foi Carraway was in the Douch: if such a letter had ben in ihe pouch ne could no: have failed to see it. It was shown by the defence that Bryan. since his short time in this service has made many e.rors; that-on tbe 21st be brought by Tarboro two letters that should have been put on there losieaa,- pu ling them on same train tbat carried Carra way's letter the same day. Bryan was made to confess ihat lnspecter Vickery had threatened to remove him if the errors did not cease. Again, Weddell Hare's lestinDDy shows defeudant could not hare abstracted the letter and then nut in the mau dox on the car August 21, as he ... . - was uunu tuwii.
