TRY ON GARDEN CLUB
The Tryon Garden Club held its
first meeting of the fall at Pear
son’s Falls. Miss Helen Stearns,
the new president, presided and
Miss Witherspoon of Spartanburg
hostess, entertaining with a de
lightful picnic tea. The club was
greatly interested to hear a report
from the Roadside Committee and
to see the work actually in pro
gress, of beautifying the highway.
The president urged all mem
bers to notify Mrs. Canfield, chair
man of the Membership Committee,
of their renewal for the coming
year.
The club has a large waiting
list and a limited membership.
It is therefore desirable to know
the exact number in order to
admit new members. Dr. Coker of
Chapel Hill will address the club
at the October meeting. Other
programs of interest have be.n
planned.
Mary Louise is the name of a
daughter born on September 17th,
to Mr. and Mirs. J. E. Carrigan,
nee Josephine Hill, of Burlington,
N. C. The mother is the daughter
of the late A. L. “Link” Hill,
former sheriff of Polk county.
Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Law leave
this weekend for a visit to Mrs.
Law’s old summer home, the Wil
liams estate, in Nacoochee Valley,
Georgia.
Grace M-ills, 27, daughte of Jess
and Grover Mills, well-known col
ored citizen, died Thursday morn
ing. Funeral arrangements have
not been completed. Burial prob
ably Sunday.
