C„ TUESDAY, JUNE 30, 1942 Young Men Register Today Young men between the ages of 18 and 20 are being registered today for the military records. ^ first ones this morning at the County Draft Board office pyon were J. C. Case of Lynn, Clyde Allen Pack of Mill Spring and Leon Clyde Gosnell of Tryon. Big Grain Crop Harvested In Polk The biggest small grain crop in recent years has just about all been harvested in Polk County. Due to effort to grow more food and feed and potato crops to im prove soil and. control erosion the largest acreage probably ever grown in the County had been sown. The yield is also continual ly rising for the County as a whole. But due to a shortage of nitrate of soda or ammonia the yield was not as good as it would been if nitrates had been t-SPd. There is no large wheat grow ers, practically every farmer in the County growing less than 15 acres. There are around 500 farmers who grow from 2 to 15 acres per farm according to the needs of the farm. The acreage of barley and oats are increasing each year and the yield per acre is being increased on most of the farms. Many Tryonites received Red Cross First Aid certificates for First Aid work. If you have not received your certificate you may do so by calling at the office of First Aid secrtary, Mrs. George A. Cathey. Weather Monday: High 87, low, 68, rain .10. . . . Horace Post, who has been doing government work in Panama, accompanied his wife to Tryon during the weekend and put her in St. Luke’s hospital. They flew by airplane to Green ville, S. C. Distant places seem so near to Tryon since the im provement of airplane service. Mrs. Post is the former Eleanor Butler, sister of M. C., A. P., Le land Butler, Mrs. Grayson Edney. Mr. Post will leave for Washing ton soon to report for Rivers and Harbor duty somewhere in the States .... Work or fight, is the spirit growing in America today. It is getting extremely unpopular to be caught loafing or just standing around the street nearly all the time, never seen to be doing anything worthwhile. So many people are in defense work, in the armed service, or do ing some regular needed work that the fellows who are loafing all the time are not making any friends. Farmers need workers now.Get color films to take pictures of the United Na tions flags to be displayed across Trade street Saturday, July 4th. There will be no big celebration here because of gas and tire sav ing program. The President and Governor have asked the people to observe the day in a manner most fitting.
