Big Grain Crop
Harvested In Polk
The biggest small grain crop
in recent years has just about
all been harvested in Polk County.
Due to effort to grow more food
and feed and potato crops to im
prove soil and. control erosion the
largest acreage probably ever
grown in the County had been
sown. The yield is also continual
ly rising for the County as a
whole. But due to a shortage of
nitrate of soda or ammonia the
yield was not as good as it would
been if nitrates had been
t-SPd.
There is no large wheat grow
ers, practically every farmer in
the County growing less than 15
acres. There are around 500
farmers who grow from 2 to 15
acres per farm according to the
needs of the farm.
The acreage of barley and oats
are increasing each year and the
yield per acre is being increased
on most of the farms.
Many Tryonites received Red
Cross First Aid certificates for
First Aid work. If you have not
received your certificate you may
do so by calling at the office of
First Aid secrtary, Mrs. George
A. Cathey.
Weather Monday: High 87, low,
68, rain .10. . . . Horace Post, who
has been doing government work
in Panama, accompanied his wife
to Tryon during the weekend and
put her in St. Luke’s hospital.
They flew by airplane to Green
ville, S. C. Distant places seem
so near to Tryon since the im
provement of airplane service.
Mrs. Post is the former Eleanor
Butler, sister of M. C., A. P., Le
land Butler, Mrs. Grayson Edney.
Mr. Post will leave for Washing
ton soon to report for Rivers and
Harbor duty somewhere in the
States .... Work or fight, is
the spirit growing in America
today. It is getting extremely
unpopular to be caught loafing or
just standing around the street
nearly all the time, never seen
to be doing anything worthwhile.
So many people are in defense
work, in the armed service, or do
ing some regular needed work that
the fellows who are loafing all
the time are not making any
friends. Farmers need workers
now.Get color films to
take pictures of the United Na
tions flags to be displayed across
Trade street Saturday, July 4th.
There will be no big celebration
here because of gas and tire sav
ing program. The President and
Governor have asked the people
to observe the day in a manner
most fitting. Any big celebration
that will make people drive cars
