Polk County had no wrecks or fatal accidents during the Labor Day week-end despite the heavy traffic over the highways, according to Patrolman W. R. Boyles. At the dangerous Mill Spring crossing where a “STOP” light is soon to be erect ed Patrolman E. M. Cowan ar rested half a dozen motorists for failing to STOP; also one motorist who was clowning .... Tryon bridge players and those from other communities who play at the Congregational church house here on Thursdays made a good show ing at the big tournament in Asheville over the week-end. The Asheville Times commenting on one of the group’s said, “Burrow, young Asheville attorney, is a pro duct of the sensational University of North Carolina group of recent veftrs which has raised Chapel Hill bridge to one of Southern eminence. It is one of the finest young groups in the country, and has produced besides Burrow in recent years the new life masters, Jim Jackson of Tryon, and William B. Woodson of Sellers, S. C. Others of the Chanel Hill group also competing in the" Regional are Jim Tapley, J. C. Barefoot, and Bob Edwards.” . . . Congratulations to Mrs. Cliff Cairns on making a hole in one on . Continued On-'Back Pape Stratford and Vance Win Trophies In Golf Mrs. Charles C. Stratford and Mrs. George Vance won the bronze trophies for first place in the Scotch Foursome tournament play Labor Day at the Tryon Country Club. James Ferguson and Charles Stratford won two golf balls for the men's first place, and Miss Jane Brown and Miss Elena Garcia were second. Following the tournament a pic nic supper was served on the por ches of the club house where golf ers and non golfers took part in the fellowship of the occasion. During the afternoon many of the young people kept the swim ming pool active. D. H. WRIGHT D. H. Wright, 62, of Campo bello, S. C. Route 2, died at his home Saturday morning. He was a steward in the Landrum Wesleyan Methodist Church. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Gramling Methodist Church. Among the survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Ralph Shields of Green’s Creek, and a brother, J. F. Wright of Landrum. DISASTER FUND TOPPED Mrs. Paul E. Culberson, secre tary of the Polk County Chapter of the American Red Cross reports that donations from the following put the fund over its goal to $601: Tryon Bank, Nelson Jackson Sr., Mrs. J. A. Feagan, Mrs. Mildred Edwards, Mrs. George Newhall, Susan H. James, Mrs. Louise Hil ton’s class Congregational Sunday school, Dr. and Mrs. Wylie, Mrs. Jessie Ames, Mrjf. Reid.
