next Tryon Little Theater play,
has announced the complete cast
for Enid Bagnold’s “The Chalk
Garden.” The play will be at the
Fine Arts Center on February 28
and 29 and March 1, 1980. There
are several leads for women in
this comedy-drama. Betty Dun
bar is making her first
appearance since the nurse in
“The Man Who Came to Dinner.”
She will be playing Mrs. St.
Maughan. Her granddaughter is
played by TLTL new- comer Jane
Schairer. Julie Wheeler returns
to our stage as Madrigal,
companion-tutor to this girl.
Jacquie Williams will be Olivia,
the estranged and daughter of
Mrs. St. Maughan. Loree
Cormick, Lyssa Cross and Cindy
Walker are the three applicants
and Betty Gibson is the nurse.
The judge will be characterized
by Sidney Sanner who has not
been on our stage since “The
Little Foxes and Thad Rector will
appear in the role of Maitland,
the manservant. Lyssa Cross and
Betty Gibson have appeared for
TLT but Loree Cormick and
Cindy Walker are making their
debuts.
Enid Bagnold, a British
aristocrat, is best known in this
country for her novel, “National
Velvet”, which was made into a
very successful American movie,
starring a newcomer to the
screen, the teenage Elizabeth
Taylor.
Her first novel, “A Diary
Without Dates”, written when
she was a young girl, was
published under a pseudonym
because of her father’s refusal to
allow it to be published, claiming
it beneath a person of her
position. She followed this with
“Serena Blandish” which made a
sensation on both sides of the
Atlantic when it was published
annonymously as being by “A
Lady of Quality”. The novel was
adapted into a play by S. N.
Behrman and produced in
America in 1929. Among other
works, she has written four plays,
three of which were produced in
New York: “Gertie”, starring
Glynis Johns in 1952; “The Chalk
Garden” in 1955; and “A Matter
of Gravity”, starring Kathryn
Hepburn in 1975, both in the
Broadway production and a
highly-successful cross-country
tour.
The original cast of “The Chalk
Garden” included such stars as
Tryon Daily Bulletin. Mon., Jan. 28, 1980
Siobhan McKenna, Fritz Weaver, unanimous in their praises of
Gladys Cooper, and Percy “The Chalk Garden.”. Brooks
Waram. The cast of the later
London production included
Dame Edith Evans and Peggy
Ashcroft. The motion picture
version, released in 1964, starred
Deborah Kerr as Madrigal and
young Hayley Mills as Laurel.
In private life, the playwright
is Lady Roderick Jones. Her
husband, Sir Roderick, is former
chairman of the board of the
Reuters news agency. The
gardening lore in “The Chalk
Garden” is authentic, because
Miss Bagnold is an enthusiastic
gardener herself.
