Weather Tuesday: high 52, low
36. Early Wednesday morning it
was sleeting, raining and
snowing. Polk County schools
were let out early due to bridges
freezing over and some ice on the
roads.
Six American diplomats who
escaped capture when the U. S.
Embassy was seized Nov. 4th
slipped out of Tehran after 12
weeks in hiding, helped by the
Canadian Embassy and an
elaborate ruse of false identities
and forged documents, it was
disclosed Tuesday.
Comedian Jimmy Durante died
at age 86 Tuesday in Santa
Monica, Calif.
Frank L. Fitzsimons Sr., 82, of
Rt. 1, Hendersonville died
Tuesday in a Hendersonville
hospital after a brief illness. He
was author of “On The Banks of

Polk Lawmen
Are Acquitted
A jury was out 12 minutes
Tuesday afternoon in U. S.
Federal District Court in Ruther
fordton and came back with a
NOT GUILTY verdict for four
Polk County lawmen. Acquitted
were Tryon Police Chief Jerry
Ross, Highway Patrolman David
Satterfield, Chief Deputy Allen
Rickman and Jailer Gary
Durham. They had been sued for
$50,000 each by convicted killer
Fred Constance who alleged that
they had violated his civil rights.
Constance claimed that he was
hit while in custody for killing
Saluda Police Chief Andrew
Williams. Constance was found
guilty for first degree murder in
the Sept. 3rd 1976 shotgun slaying
and sentenced to life imprison
ment.
WILSON WITHDRAWING
FOR COMMISSIONER RACE
Dock B. Wilson who earlier
announced that he was going to
run for County Commissioner has
announced that he is withdrawing
from the race.

TRYON 1ST BAPTIST
Dr. Fred B. Bentley, President
of Mars Hill College will be the
guest speaker at the Sunday 11
a.m. worship service of the Tryon
First Baptist Church.
Dr. Bentley has hqld various
church positions and taught at
Indiana University and the
University of Louisville before
coming to Mars Hill in 1966.

Endowment Fund

The Board of Directors of the
Polk County Community Founda
tion and The Polk County Chapter
of the American Field Service
have announced the establish
ment of the Polk County AFS
Endowment Fund.
A generous donation from John
A. Stephenson, in memory of his
wife, Elizabeth K. Stephenson,
has made this fund possible. In
setting up this endowment with
the Foundation, Mr. Stephenson
expressed the hope that AFS
activity in both the schools and
the community would continue to
grow as it has in the past two
years and that our young people
would have the opportunity to
enlarge their worlds and foster
human understanding through
the AFS programs.
The Foundation will give the
annual income from this Fund to
the AFS Polk County Chapter to

Elected President Of
Tryon Country Club
The annual meeting of the
Tryon County Club was held on
January 24 at the Hearthstone
Inn with 94 members in
attendance.
Elected to three-year terms as
directors were Frank Johnson,
Guy Housh, and Robert Mueller.
They succeeded Richard Palmer,
Russell Gratner, and Fred
Margolf whose terms expired.
Following committee reports,
golf trophies were awarded to
Fred Edwards, Jr., Club
Champion; Fred Edwards, Sr.,
Runner-up; Marion Palmer,
Seniors Champion; Henry Mc
Clintock, President’s Cup; and
Eric Larson, Executive Course
Champion. A film covering the
exciting highlights of the 1979
Masters Championship at Augus
ta was shown.
Following the meeting the new
Board of Directors elected
Robert F. Gibbs, President;
George A. Blaine, Vice Pesident;
and Paula Joyce, Secretary-
Treasurer.
At the first regular meeting of
the new Board on January 29,
President Gibbs appointed the
following committee chairmen:
Finance, Larry Pexton; Mem
bership, Robert Mueller; House,
Robert Creswell; Grounds and
Greens, Henry McClintock;
Special Events, Guy Housh;
Publicity, George Blaine; Golf
and Tournaments, Frank John
son; and Swimming Pool, Fred
Edwards, Sr.
