Landrum Boys Win Christ Church and Landrum split basketball doubleheaders Friday night at Christ Church. The Christ Church girls won 37-27 and the Landrum boys took a 68-65 win. The Christ Church girls opened up an early lead and by half led 22-8 Parks was high for Christ Church with 15 points and Ann Walker topped Landrum with 18 points. The Landrum boys who had lost two close conference games in their last two outings, came from behind in their 68-65 win. Christ Church had a 27-25 lead at halftime. Ricky McDowell led the Landrum scorers with 24 points while F. McDowell and Thomp son each had 10 points. David Sagedy was high for Christ Church with 23 points. Miss Child, granddaughter of W. K. Child of Rt. 1, Landrum, formerly of Spartanburg, is a student at DePaul University. She received a B. Mus. in piano performance from Converse College, and M. A. degree from the University of Chicago. — Spartanburg Herald Norman Ponder Norman Lee Ponder, 69, of Rt. 1, Mill Spring, died Saturday afternoon in St. Luke’s Hospital after a long illness. A native of Bolivar, Tenn., he was a son of the late Charlie E. and Rose English Ponder. He was a retired sawmill worker. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Katie Mae Brigman Ponder; sons, David Ponder of Talladega, Ala., and Jimmy Ponder of Mill Spring, daughters, Mrs. Mary Frances Helms of Spartanburg, S.C., Mrs. Kattie L. Services will be held today (Tues.) at 2 p.m. at McFarland Mrs. L. Blackwell Mrs. Lcuille Ruff Blackwell, 79, of Rt. 1, Columbus, died Sunday in St. Luke’s Hospital after a long illness. A native of Polk County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Ellen Summers Ruff. She was a member of Pleasant Valley Free Will Baptist Church. Surviving are: a son, R. C. Blackwell of Columbus; two daughters, Mrs. Berta Hensley of Hendersonville and Mrs. Jennise Searcy of Columbus; 14 grand children; 30 great-grandchildren. Services will be held today (Tues.) at 4 p.m. at McFarland Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Silas H. Bradley and Rev. Fred Rhodes officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Icy Road Patrolman David Satterfield reported a minor traffic accident Sunday involving Paul Smith of Columbus and Philip Stanley Rhodes of Saluda. The accident occured on State Road 1103 (Thompson Road) near Saluda on a grade and in a curve. Mr. Smith was coming down the hill in a ‘71 Chevrolet pick-up and Mr. Rhodes was coming up in a ‘74 Ford pick-up. They met on a section of the road which was covered with a sheet of ice. Mr. Smith couldn’t get stopped and slid into Mr. Rhodes’s truck. There were no injuries and only minor damage to the trucks. HOST TEACHERS Twenty-seven teachers from Western North Carolina and upper South Carolina attended the annual in-service meeting held recently at the Columbus Seventh-day Adventist elemen tary school.
