Tryon Wins Two

The Tryon Tigers defeated the
North Carolina School for the
Deaf Bears in a doubleheader
Friday night at Tryon. The Tryon
girls won 58-41 and the Tryon
boys clinched the regular season
championship with their 74-68
win. This was the Tigers 17th
straight win as they brought their
record to 17-1 overall and 8-0 in
conference play.
The Tryon girls led all the way
as they improved their record to
13-5 overall and 6-2 in conference
play. The Tryon girls led 23-15 at
half, 46-21 at the end of the third
quarter. In double figures for the
Tryon girls were Robin Simpson
with 12 points and Becky Nesbitt
and Brenda Keys with 11 each.
NCSD’s Bobbie Mitchell was the
game’s high scorer with 21
points.
The NCNB Bear’s Archie
Elliott scored the game’s first
basket for a 2-0 lead. The
Bears didn’t lead again until Hill
hit a bucket in the third quarter to
go ahead 36-34. Each time the
Tigers tied the score. The score
was also tied at 38-38, 40-40, 42-42
and 58-58, 60-60 and 64-64. The
Tigers stayed just ahead the rest
of the time. The Tigers had a
comfortable 20-12 lead at the end
of the first quarter, but NCSD
made a comeback after falling
10 points back and tied it 34-34 at
the halftime buzzer. The Tigers
would threaten to pull away, but
the Bears would stage a
comeback each time. At the end

pulled even with 1:14 left as
Tracey Rogers tiefl the score for
NCSD at 64-64. Sam Miller hit two
free throws and then Bruce
Butler hit two free throws to
make it 68-64. The Tigers went on
to win 74-68.
It wasn’t one of Tryon’s best
games as a team, but Sam Miller
with 24 points and Warfield
Kirkendoll with 17 points kept the
Tigers out front. NCSD was led
by Stacey Rogers with 26 points
and Archie Elliott with 18 points
