Steps Approved
The Tryon Central Business
District Committee met Monday
night at the Town Hall. The
Committee received notice of the
approval by the Southern
Railway for the proposed steps
and crossing in the downtown
area. (The actual location is the
site of the former Rock Grill).
Co-chairman Harry Evans
reported that project chairman
Boyd Dunbar was hopeful
construction would begin as soon
as possible. A mason contractor
has already been selected and it
is hopeful work will be completed
by mid-April. The steps are being
funded by a $6,000 grant from the
Polk County Community Founda
tion. The steps are part of the
overall plan for downtown
beautification and will provide a
means of access from the
downtown area to the Depot
Plaza and Pacolet Street area.
The Central Business District
expressed their appreciation to
the Tryon Lions Club for a $400
contribution to be used in the
downtown beautification project.
(The Cowan Memorial Garden is
moving along and is almost
complete). Other areas schedul
ed for landscaping include
McCown St. and Trade St. area.
Some plantings have already
been put in and there will be a
cluster of azalea bushes in the
Tryon Horse area and John
Vollmer will build a small
retaining -wall.
